Publisher's summary

A fugitive Highlander.

A proper English lady.

A dangerous liaison.

Alec Mackenzie knows Lady Celia is key to finding his missing brother. The trouble is, Alec is supposed to be dead, and he needs the world to keep believing that.

The artful ways of Alec Mackenzie.

Alec will do anything to find his brother, Will, including pretend to be a penniless drawing master to London aristocrats. The one man who might know where his brother is being held is a powerful duke, and that duke has daughter who needs art lessons....

Lessons can lead to startling revelations....

Lady Celia is intrigued by the Scotsman, so obviously a warrior who pretends he is not. She's also intrigued by his instruction on painting the human form, something no young lady should take an interest in. But Celia, ruined by The Disaster and already beyond hope, dares to let the Highlander teach her all he knows....

Note: Alec Mackenzie is the brother of Malcolm from The Stolen Mackenzie Bride. He is an ancestor of the Mackenzie family whose story begins with The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie.

Alex Mackenzie's story

Very creative read, a wonderful way for us to find out through the diaries that Ian found in the attic. After reading these diaries of some of his ancestors, Beth coerced him into telling her Alex's story. Will's story to be recounted on another day, loving his wife was more important. 😍

4.5 Stars I Love the Mackenzies

I couldn't wait for this book to come out. I love JA books regarding the MacKenzie family. It's like reading about old friends, especially since Ian and Beth are part of the story. I agree that the streaminess does not match the book about Ian or Cameron, however, the story holds your attention as you wonder what will happen next. I am looking forward to the story about Will.

I always enjoy Angela Dawe.

Enjoyable

Setting: London, England 1746
Genre: Romance
The book begins in 1892 with Ian Mackenzie in the attic of Kilmorgen Castle going through family documents and old letters. When his wife joins him, he tells her the story of his lateral ancestor, Alec Mackenzie.
After the battle at Culloden Moor the Mackenzie family (Daniel, Duke of Kilmorgen, and his 3 sons Malcolm, Alec, and Will) were declared dead. Instead, they had escaped to France to wait until they had been cleared of treason. But Will returned to Scotland and was arrested. So Alec, an artist, went to England to find out where he was being held. Disguised and using a fake name, he moves into the household of Lady Flora, Dowager Marchioness of Ellesmere who has agreed to help him. Rumor has it that the Duke of Crenshaw’s regiment is involved in keeping prisoners. In order to get information, Alec is to give drawing lessons to the Duke’s daughter, Lady Celia Fotheringhay. Celia’s mother is allowing her to learn because she had refused to marry the man of her mother’s choice, despite being pawed and forcibly kissed by that man. At least as a portraitist, to her mother’s thinking, she will be useful in supporting the Whigs. Over the course of the next while, Celia takes instruction and Alec spends his free time hunting down information about where the captured Scots are being held. And during this time, their attraction for one another grows.
The story is well told, with well-rounded characters. The only thing I found confusing was the inclusion of Alec’s daughter. Her presence added nothing to the direction of the story. She could have been edited out and the gist of it would have stayed the same. Other than that, I found the book to be quite entertaining.
The narration by Angela Dawe is excellent. I have found her too laconic in some of her performances in this series, but her pacing in this production is good. She does a good job of differentiating well between characters, and she does well with both genders. Her Scottish accent sounds authentic without being unintelligible.

Loved it!

What a great writer and also narrator. This tale was about how a Highland Mackenzie managed to save his brother, keep his baby safe and catch an amazing wife all while being a sexy highlander any lass would desire.
I adore how smooth and interesting Jennifer Ashley's stories always seem to be. I can't wait to read and listen to the next.

Little Bit of Everything

Having a reading list that can be all over the spectrum in regards to genre, writing styles etc., sometimes you need a heroic & romantic adventure with some mystery to complete the list. Jennifer Ashley never fails to disappoint when it comes to a well-written romantic story with historical significance. Her ability to put two characters together in a believable and original narrative never seems to miss. This entire series has been that and more.

Selecting the right narration can make or break a book no matter how well it’s written. Angela Dawe performs this story and her delivery was perfection. I look forward to to the next when it comes time for me to indulge again. Will that be soon? Most likely!!
