Jiran's escape from the Numbered did not lead to freedom; it was a one-way ticket to the fourth tier Arena: a place from which no one has ever emerged.
Even the vaunted Remalon have failed to conquer its mysteries. Here, survival has only one currency: brutal adaptation. That suits Jiran just fine. To return to Mayalyn's side and keep his promise to Olive, he will embrace the Arena's savagery. He will forge his powers into something unseen in all of Madra's history.
While his fight for survival unfolds, the Finlest Empire teeters on the edge of collapse. The emperors have vanished after their battle against the Graymin King, allowing the rot at the empire's core to spread. With its focus to the north, a hidden conspiracy makes its move for dominance.
Jiran's return could save his home, but it could also unleash a catastrophe far greater than the Graymin. By surviving the unsurvivable, he has proven to Madra that she no longer needs to pull her punches. This time, the horrors he must overcome will have the potential to follow him home. When Jiran finally claws his way back to a shattered empire, will he arrive as its savior, or as the harbinger of its ultimate doom?

I loved watching the main character grow and make choices to handle challenges; his progression is fun and engaging. My only small critique is that whenever he faces a problem he seems unable to handle, he tends to gain a new ability and quickly overcomes it. It works occasionally, but it happens frequently enough that it felt a little repetitive.
The narration by J.S. Arquin was fabulous — I enjoyed every minute of listening. Overall, a fantastic installment, and I’m looking forward to the next book!

the world building and magic system are the highlights of not only this book but the series; however they are overshadowed by horrible character development. Somehow, the best character in the series is turning out to be Olive a major side character. Maylyn is extremely annoying, threatening abuse and never letting the MC have any secrets by reading his emotions all the time; while claiming she trusts him. Nya is just a mess of a character with the only development being she only gets stronger because of Jiran. Camron is comedic relief, the entire series would be the same if he never existed. Jiran feels like a weakling emotionally, always getting ragged on by his girlfriend and cousin. His character development went backwards, all the confidence and strength he gained in book 1, only applies to fighting. Only his mistakes are called out and they aren't even mistakes. He sees enemies that could kill the people he loves, they are 4 tiers above him, chases them away, he's in the wrong because he didn't talk to his gf about it... The entire series has devolved into this slop.
The harem troupe is overrated, and the romance is detracting from the story. What good is a story when the characters take away from it? Give it a try, don't just take my word for it. However, this is where I'm dropping the series.
I still ended up being long winded, sorry.
The Fall of the series.
