Growing up on the Navajo Indian Reservation, David Crow and his siblings idolized their dad. Tall, strong, smart, and brave, the self-taught Cherokee regaled his family with stories of his World War II feats. But as time passed, David discovered the other side of Thurston Crow, the ex-con with his own code of ethics that justified cruelty, violence, lies - even murder.

A shrewd con artist with a genius IQ, Thurston intimidated David with beatings to coerce him into doing his criminal bidding. David's mom, too mentally ill to care for her children, couldn't protect him. One day, Thurston packed up the house and took the kids, leaving her nothing. Soon he remarried, and David learned that his stepmother was just as vicious and abusive as his father.

Through sheer determination, and with the help of a few angels along the way, David managed to get into college and achieve professional success. When he finally found the courage to stop helping his father with his criminal activities, he unwittingly triggered a plot of revenge that would force him into a showdown with Thurston Crow. With lives at stake, including his own, David would have only 24 hours to outsmart his father - the brilliant, psychotic man who bragged that the three years he spent in the notorious San Quentin State Prison had been the easiest time of his life.

A painful story to listen to , yet I feel I’m better for it. I certainly identify with much and am happy David found the Spiritual healing of forgiveness. Life has it’s paradoxes.

Outstanding in every way

Incredibly moving, amazing, riveting story beautifully told and perfectly read. Truly an instant classic, razor-sharp with truth, rage and compassion, left this reader in tearful awe. Not a dull moment or a false note. Don’t hesitate, just read it.

A very hard read

This book told of horrible abuse in explicit terms. And it went on and on. Add to that murder, theft and all the other nefarious activities that makes a hard criminal, I found myself wanting to kill the father in many different ways. It's difficult to believe, although it shouldn't be these days, that the father worked his way to a fairly high level position in the federal government. Remarkable that all the kids made it through childhood in one piece let alone became successful. All that said, It was well told and the story is really about forgiveness and how the son finally reached that decision. If you have only heard or known about poverty and abuse in families from a distant or intellectual perspective, this will open your eyes.

Got to Love the Daily Deals

Got this on a daily deal and so glad I did. The way some people grow up is astounding and to carve out a descent life as adults after their upbringing. Wow. Some parents do so much harm to their kids. It is an amazing story. I think maybe I should look at more autobiographies,
