主人公の良平が８歳になった年、小田原熱海間で鉄道敷設工事が始まった。
そこで使われている運搬用トロッコに心惹かれた良平は、毎日現場を見物しに行くようになる。
ある日、現場にいた若い男の作業員と一緒にトロッコを押すことになり、喜んで手伝っていた良平であったが、
段々と帰り道が気になり始める。とうとう作業員から帰るように言われ、
辺りの薄暗さを心細く感じつつも、ひとり線路沿いを走り出した。
芥川龍之介（あくたがわ・りゅうのすけ）
大正期の小説家。1892年東京都生まれ。東大卒。乳児期から母方の実家で育てられた。
東京帝国大学在学中の1916年に第四次「新思潮」創刊号に発表した「鼻」が夏目漱石に絶賛され
文壇にデビューする。初期の古典を材料にした「羅生門」「芋粥」「地獄変」などの名作を経て、「点鬼簿」「歯車」など自己の周辺にテーマを得た作品に移行。
様々なトラブルで心身とも衰弱し、1927年に自殺して36歳の若さでこの世を去る。
没後、親友である菊池寛によって、芥川賞が創設された。
