I started by listening to one chapter a day as I completed my daily step goal on a walk around my neighborhood. The chapters are short so I thought, let's just listen to each chapter twice. What an unexpected surprise that delivered! I have a running color commentary going through my head and so each time Matt mentioned an approach, concept, idea....my brain kicked in and began talking to me about how I'd tweak his idea to fit my preferences. Then I'd notice that I missed a bunch of content. On my second listen, I heard things I totally missed the first time. And this matters. Because it actively proved that my ego was screaming and I could control how I chose to engage with it. Today, I finished Matt's book (it's been just over a week since I started) and I had the most profound illumination. The aha moment was totally unexpected ~ thank you wise old bearded man ~ and has clicked my other retirement tools into place. It's as if I had a loose part on my chain and it finally connected. I am so grateful.
One other thing I'll mention if you're considering this audio book. I have tinnitus. It's super loud and with me 24x7. Except I don't notice it when I sit in silence now. It's still there but I just don't focus on it. Instead I'm gently calming down before sleep. When I started this book I was coming off of some powerful sleep meds by going cold turkey. So I was up until 2, 3 and even 4. Last night, I fell asleep at 12 and slept soundly for 8 hours. I feel brand new. Is it the quiet self-awareness time before bed? Is it leaving my devices far away from my bedside table? Is it letting go of the narrative my brain wants to yell at me? Is it all of these things? I'll tell you want it isn't. It isn't that I haven't tried all of these ideas before. I think it's because I found the self-awareness to accept and commit to this life practice.
Thank you Matt for your patient tone of voice that let me truly hear you. Thank you for the way in which you outlined your approach and told your stories as I find them so easy to apply to my own life. Thank you for your counsel of the risks I'd face as I tried to force fit self-awareness into my ego's skepticism. I laughed out loud many times when you warned me about short cuts and overthinking. And it brought me back to trusting the process. I'm so glad I did. Because for the first time ever (I"m 65) I can answer "tell me about yourself" without saying a job title. And that was truly an unexpected blessing from your book.
