On the eve of the global lockdown, Don Barlow opens the door of his old beachside cottage to find a pretty girl with pink-tipped hair, claiming to have nowhere to go.

He allows her entry, and so begins a mystery set in unprecedented times: with the virus raging outside their home, the girl cannot be asked to leave, but what does he risk by having her stay?

A sweet but melancholy story of family, old loves, anger and endearment. A story line we all know from some other time.

Captivating

but there are gaps that aren't explained if they were meant to enhance the story - like why mother and father state the same child was born in two d
different years.

Interesting listen but

this is a great short novel. I enjoyed every minute but especially toward the end there's a great surprise. the ending is very well-crafted and emotionally powerful.

Fabulous

A real story with enough depth to keep me listening with hardly a break.. Exceptionally good narration. Four hours was the perfect length to develop the story and characters and there was not a minute of extraneous detail or dialogue. I hardly choose fiction from the freebie choices because they are usually so badly written, overperformed, or just boring. This one was excellent.

Not since "A Handmaid's Tale" have I been unable to step away from a story. Filled with mystery, concern, confusion, surprise, and bittersweet resolve. For anyone who enjoys family intrigue, I highly recommend this listen. Superbly performed.
