Paul manages an old-school plastics factory that has pivoted during the pandemic to making face masks and is now booming. Along comes Emily, the wayward daughter of an old friend, whom Paul hires to be his assistant, and she’s a sparkling force determined to prove her worth with the one chance she’s been given.  

Imogen, a beautiful former acquaintance of Paul’s, also coincidently appears outside the factory, down on her luck and clearly full of ulterior motive. The masked truths of the women around him soon threaten to turn Paul’s quiet family life upside down.

It was ok until...

This is a short novella and it had a good plot. What I didn't like was the reference to Covid-19. It was strange to hear it in a fiction story. I think if another disease or a made up illness would've made this story more interesting. Also, the credit card scam felt confusing. There wasn't clarity on if she was guilty or not. Cody, the son, pops in and out of the book and I didn't know if he liked school.

Wow! When you think you can predict what is going to happen, it changes! You really need to get this one!

Basically written

Interesting premise. The author made an attempt at intrigue but failed. Kept looking like the story was building up to a decent enough mystery but then the last two or three chapters were just an explanation of what the mystery was about. Looked like either the authors first attempt at a book or she ran out of steam and needed to get it published. Reader was solid.

Weird — and not in a good way

The characters are very odd, and the main character is not especially engaging. Even for a freebie, this one was rough. Narrator was great, though — even when his Aussie showed in his pronunciation.

This was a good book with some mystery, interesting story line, history and life experiences.

OK story

Story was ok. It became a bit melodramatic for my taste. Narrator was OK but pronounced tattoo as tado.

Totally believable except...

Story is a fully fascinating unraveling of an American life, with a Narrator with an American accent. But, as an American, there were sever words both written and spoken that would never be spoken or pronounced by an Average American.
I stumbled a bit awkwardly, got hung up on key phases, and then played catch up.

To be clear, this story is anything but average.
So, if you can quickly recover from the the whole "Toe-May-Toe" vs "Toe-Maw-Toe" situation, then this is a worthwhile listen.

Surprising Emotional Story

Frankly, I didn't care about any of the characters in the 1/2 to 3/4 of the book. I asked myself why I was still listening. However, I had listened to this author before, enjoyed her book, and was too tired to choose another story.

In the last 1/4, suddenly the story suddenly changed and you find out why the first part existed. When the story ended, I was emotionally spent. It shows what can happen after childhood trauma, what can happen when things are impetuously said and most of all what can happen when you passively walk through your own life.

A great book from Australia. There are no strong accents, so easily understood.
