2021 Washington Post Best Books of the Year

From Liane Moriarty, the number one New York Times best-selling author of Big Little Lies and Nine Perfect Strangers, comes Apples Never Fall, an audiobook that looks at marriage, siblings, and how the people we love the most can hurt us the deepest.

The Delaney family love one another dearly - it’s just that sometimes they want to murder each other....

If your mother was missing, would you tell the police? Even if the most obvious suspect was your father?

This is the dilemma facing the four grown Delaney siblings.

The Delaneys are fixtures in their community. The parents, Stan and Joy, are the envy of all of their friends. They’re killers on the tennis court, and off it their chemistry is palpable. But after 50 years of marriage, they’ve finally sold their famed tennis academy and are ready to start what should be the golden years of their lives. So why are Stan and Joy so miserable?

The four Delaney children - Amy, Logan, Troy, and Brooke - were tennis stars in their own right, yet as their father will tell you, none of them had what it took to go all the way. But that’s okay, now that they’re all successful grown-ups and there is the wonderful possibility of grandchildren on the horizon.

One night a stranger named Savannah knocks on Stan and Joy’s door, bleeding after a fight with her boyfriend. The Delaneys are more than happy to give her the small kindness she sorely needs. If only that was all she wanted.

Later, when Joy goes missing, and Savannah is nowhere to be found, the police question the one person who remains: Stan. But for someone who claims to be innocent, he, like many spouses, seems to have a lot to hide. Two of the Delaney children think their father is innocent, two are not so sure - but as the two sides square off against each other in perhaps their biggest match ever, all of the Delaneys will start to reexamine their shared family history in a very new light.

Reseñas de la Crítica

"Audiobook narrator Caroline Lee’s voice is an irresistible, visceral joy; like the best audiobook narrators, her delivery is endlessly malleable, shifting nimbly across accent, register and tone to create a sense that one is inside the story rather than peering in from the outside." (Farhad Manjoo, The New York Times)

"[Lee] adds a crisp warmth that makes for an easy and absorbing listen." (Alan Rosenberg, The Providence Journal)

"Australian narrator Caroline Lee is an amazing performer who digs so deeply into her characters' personas that listeners will become addicted to each witty, insightful, and gutsy one." (AudioFile Magazine, Earphones Award Winner)

Editor's Pick

I fell hard for this listen
Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty is an ignore-your-children-and-household-chores type of all-consuming listen. Moriarty’s talent was on full display—no detail is wasted in this audiobook, and it continually amazed me how she tied each piece of the narrative together. When the matriarch of the tennis-famous Delaney family goes missing, all eyes are on the husband, but Moriarty mysteries are never that simple. The author has once again teamed up with Caroline Lee, who delivers on the story’s slightly sinister vibe with her raspy Australian timbre. I can’t stop talking about this one (even my husband is now listening so he can understand the obsession), and I can’t wait to geek out with my fellow editors once they’ve devoured it too. —Katie O., Audible Editor

Lo que los oyentes dicen sobre Apples Never Fall

Con calificación alta para:

The Story Revolves Around The Mysterious Disappearance Of The Delaney Family Matriarch, Joy, And The Subsequent Unraveling Of The Complex Family Dynamics. While The Intriguing Premise And Well-developed Characters Initially Hook The Reader, Many Felt The Plot Meanders With Unnecessary Details And Subplots That Slow The Pacing. The Relatable Family Relationships, Sibling Rivalries, And Emotional Depth Are Praised, But The Narrative Structure Alternating Between Past And Present Timelines Caused Confusion For Some. The Story Promises Unpredictable Twists And Turns, Though Opinions Differed On Whether The Eventual Reveal And Ending Delivered A Satisfying Payoff. Overall, It's A Character-driven Domestic Drama Exploring Complex Themes Of Family, Marriage, And Relationships, With A Suspenseful Mystery Element That Kept Many Readers Invested Despite The Flaws.

Author Never Fails

Liane Moriarty has done it again! I swore I was going to listen to her new book slowly because I love them so much. I wanted to spread it out over at least a week. However, I listened nonstop and finished it in two days because it is soooo good!!!! I loved the characters and story and I had to know what they were going to do next. The narrator, Caroline Lee, is so incredibly talented….I would hug her and tell her how much I love her work just as much as the author. I recommend to all!!!

Loved it!

I normally love Liane’s books, but was NOT a fan of Nine Perfect Strangers, so I was a little nervous about this one, but it really touched a chord with me. The family dynamics hit home. So glad I bought it!

Love the narrator!

All of her books are entertaining. I’ve read a few reviews that mention a dislike of the narrator, but I’ve listen to a few books with her and I think she’s great.

This Narrator will make you a better person

Despite the best-selling author, was on the fence because of all of the negative narrator reviews. I have to admit, her pretty, up-swinging voice is not typical for books in the “thriller” section and put me off at first, but I couldn’t help but feel a little more friendly & peppy while listening to her. She did a great job, and I really don’t think she’s getting a fair shake here.

The story is not thrilling. It’s more of a complicated, wholesome novel with just enough darkness to make it edgy at times. If I blindly listened to this book without knowing the author, I would have guessed it was Lisa Jewell…. Fantastic character development, compassionate, funny at times, but very slow. However, it was just entertaining and interesting enough two keep me in it. If you are a mom and a wife, it will really make you think and also to feel for other women around you in various stages of life… emotion and or thought-provoking.

Too long with little reward

This book was a let down.
it was far too long with very little reward.
I think "Big little lies" ruined this author for me because I'm always looking for her next book to be of the same calibur but it never is.

Ode to the Boomer mother

I have read some of Liane Moriarty’s other books and enjoyed them, but this one I found myself continually checking to see how much was left. 3/4 of the book is a female Boomers musings on life, the plot and twist really only take up about a 1/4 of the book and would have been a better book if that quarter was all that had been written. The twist isn’t even really a twist, most readers will guess it from the beginning, and like me feel let down when they turn out to be right. There was potential for a better story but got lost in somewhere.
In the credits she claims the book is about sibling rivalry, if that’s true then she took an odd route to present it. Sibling rivalry from the prospective of the mother maybe? Even the children’s stories in the book feel as if they were written by a Boomer trying to write their child’s perspective.
Boomer age women will Love this book, their husbands might also like it, their children will probably find the stereotypes annoying.

Good book…but

The book was good the narrator was awful. I couldn’t stand the sound of her voice. All the characters sounded the same. Old and whiny.
I actually couldn’t finish listening to it, so I bought the book about half way through .

Rambles on too much

The narrator was OK. She did well with voices and her addiction was superb however her voice was somewhat grating after a time. The overall story was pretty good and had a lot of supporting details however they were too many side tangents that were unnecessary. A condensed version of the story would have been much better. Stan was the unsung hero of the book and the character was written quite beautifully. His emotional journey and later connection with his family was the highlight of the story.

I wanted to like this book

I powered through hoping the story would gain speed. I started to toward the end but not enough for me to love it. I didn’t care for the narrator either. She was whiny but the characters dialog were whiny too.
