From the best-selling author of Why We Get Fat, a groundbreaking, eye-opening exposé that makes the convincing case that sugar is the tobacco of the new millennium: backed by powerful lobbies, entrenched in our lives, and making us very sick.

Among Americans, diabetes is more prevalent today than ever; obesity is at epidemic proportions; nearly 10% of children are thought to have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. And sugar is at the root of these, and other, critical society-wide, health-related problems. With his signature command of both science and straight talk, Gary Taubes delves into Americans' history with sugar: its uses as a preservative, as an additive in cigarettes, the contemporary overuse of high-fructose corn syrup. He explains what research has shown about our addiction to sweets. He clarifies the arguments against sugar, corrects misconceptions about the relationship between sugar and weight loss; and provides the perspective necessary to make informed decisions about sugar as individuals and as a society.

In depth study of the effects of sugar in the human body. Easy to follow and makes sense to the layman. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to know know more about diseases of the modern Western society.

More to know about dangers of sugar

This is a well laid out and totally fascinating look at sugar. It's history, and impact is thoroughly detailed. This is also not a scree against sugar rather think of it as evidence which could be presented to a jury in the trial of sugar where sugar is accused of being at the root of diseases of western civilization.

This is not a diet book

I'd say the first half of the book was extremely interesting and informative, opening my eyes to places I'd never suspect Thai sugar was used. it honestly is used in everything, like cigarettes?

I've been looking into the impact of sugar for many years, and have actively avoided eating it during this time. What is presented makes sense and I've done research by looking through biochemistry books, concentrating on metabolism, and what is presented follows the theories of biochemistry as well.

People will believe what they wish to believe, this book presents strong materials but if you really wish to find his material false I am sure you can find that. I have several families and friend members that I have told details of possible sugar detriments to, yet they continue to eat sugar and not heed the warnings

I can say is this book does a great job in presenting its case and I wish people would listen thank you

very informative about sugar

I can't believe I've been doing so many things wrong through the years when I thought I was being healthy. No wonder I was pre-diabetic and struggling with my weight among many other things.

I definitely will not look at sugar in the same way.

Loved it

I liked the approach in how this topic was covered. It was very engaging. It felt like following a trail; hence the title.

A lot of great material. Very educational and eye opening. And the narrator pace and tone of voice was fantastic and very enjoyable.
