A hilarious and addictive first book by Kenny King, a cultivation fantasy/system optimization series—perfect for fans of Beware of Chicken and He Who Fights With Monsters—where an underpowered hero must level up in a strange fantasy world through sheer determination and endless persistence.

When Chuck dies and wakes up in a fantasy game world, he discovers that the secret to success isn’t heroics or clever tricks—it’s sheer grinding persistence.

After spending four months hitting a practice dummy until he breaks the combat system, Chuck embarks on a methodical quest to obtain the most powerful gear possible through relentless optimization. Armed with his evolving practice sword and an unwavering commitment to making his numbers go up, he tackles elemental dungeons, goblin hordes, and the occasional social interaction with the same cold efficiency.

In a world where most adventurers rush headlong into danger seeking glory, Chuck will be the ultimate grinder, meticulously calculating every copper coin, every experience point, and every decimal place of damage in his single-minded pursuit of perfect stats.

Sometimes, the most powerful weapon isn’t magic or heroism. Sometimes, it’s just refusing to quit.

I’m on chapter 19 and they have talked about stats being a thing as food raises it but this guy is lvl 13 now and I haven’t heard his stat allocation once. I’ve only heard about experience and attack lvl. This seems like a massive oversight that could have been fixed by some basic editing. I read it was crunchy and I like that but this it isn’t. Omitting that huge detail is too big a hole in the story to overlook especially for a book described as crunchy.

Crunchy but not

Great narrator! Luke never disappoints. My first system optimization series, I figured there would be lots of stats. Stats were fast, but I didnt mind. I dont focus too much "on the numbers". I really enjoyed to story. Great MC and side characters. MC's player name is NSFW btw, headphones required! Looking forward to the next release.

Crunchy but Fun

The story is all over the place, I had to re-read the first chapter as I though I had missed the back story (spoiler their isn’t much of one). The author dedicates several chapters to mindlessly doing the same thing over and over again. There barely any interaction with other chapter until much latter in the book and the world doesn’t feel very fleshed out. The stats are good but without a interesting character the story lacks substance. Overall it’s just a mess can’t recommend.

It’s a Hot Mess

mc before choosing from 3 tunnels, we should start with red, it will be the most efficient that way

also mc after the 3 tunnels: obviously the tunnel order didn't matter

the author seemed to have certain things in mind regardless of if they made sense

for example: MC tells another character hey, why don't you show me your t!ts
that same character later THANKS the MC for not hitting on her like everyone else (at best after the sexual harassment he treated her with indifference)

what's up with the sword? the idea of what if I focused on my beginner/starting ability until I had it mastered was interesting, and the idea that practicing with the same sword for months would give some sword benefits(maybe speed or accuracy?) was good, but then magically it gets crystal and fire and ice abilities when even in universe it's explicitly stated that items can only have fire OR ice as they'd cancel each other out and no one did anything special to allow the sword to get around this?! wtf. If you could just cut some fire and ice elementals and get that ability everyone would have it. It feels like the author just really wanted their MC to have an OP sword and didn't think about it at all. Also if your MC only has 1 sword strike skill why give the same benefit to unarmed combat? I get wanting to make your MC powerful, but let them earn it and don't just give it for free.

Also if you want your MC to be a socially inept jerk that's fine, but don't make everyone love him for it. if anything it should hurt him and make people give him bad advice and no assistance, but in the story they all seem to bend over backwards to give him tips on how to be the best ever adventurer and give him a great deal on everything even when he gave them reasons to want to scam him.

person with badly written autism pretends to be focused on efficiency, but it's actually the authors vicarious power fantasy

Until around 5 hrs left in book it was great. Story still was but unlike reading where you can skip the boring parts on audible you have to listen to a full experience breakdown for each damn kill. Maybe you could condense experience granting to after each fight not each kill as to me it totally breaks the immersion.

Good story

This was a good start to the series, though I did find myself overwhelmed at times by the constant combat calculations. After nearly every battle, there’s a detailed breakdown of experience points gained, and I often felt like I needed to tap the skip-ahead button. It does improve in Book 2, where the author moves toward summarizing those moments instead of listing them in full.

That said, I really enjoyed the character himself and the relationships he builds. His single-minded grind dedication was both entertaining and oddly nostalgic, reminding me of old-school video games where persistence and effort paid off over time. Even more fun was seeing how other characters reacted to his relentless focus.

Since this is Book 1, I want to add a note for readers considering the full series: while this first book is true to the genre and very approachable, Book 2 shifts into including multiple explicit sexual scenes. There are none here in Book 1, but some readers may appreciate a heads-up before committing to the series.

Overall, I loved the story and the narration. It was a fun listen and a solid entry into the genre.

Fun grind, but heavy on combat math

Not much story. Just a power fantasy where the main guy can’t lose and never comes close to dying. Enjoyable especially because the reader is so good at voices. Good if you are going through rough times and just need a hero who can’t lose.

Reader is fantastic, story is power trip

I laughed. A lot! The MC takes weaponised autism to new heights with a level of 'just don't care" about anything else that creates a single minded focus which pays off handsomely.
I will be checking out more of this guy's work.

This is a good book. Well written, good narration and funny characters.
There are a few pet peeves that drags it down for me though. There are inconsistencies such as "what happens when you die?" in the beginning it's established that everybody is immortal - you just lose levels and skills when you die. But then later people say things like "I got this from my late aunt, rest her soul." And "they were all slaughtered leaving no witnesses" - how is that possible when people respawn?

Also, other characters keep saying what a tactical genius he is but at one point he literally say something along the lines of "the enemy has a massive speed advantage. we need to get away from this choke point and onto open ground".

Pretty standard - well written.

An over powered main character, as the title of the book suggests which I love. No drama, just the MC advancing skills killing monsters. This is exactly the kind of book I really enjoy, giving a nice break from reality that doesn't involve lots of people dieing or other heavy topics. Just feel good enjoyment.

A delightful read
