Discover a revolutionary and evidence-based method to treat alcohol use disorder—that doesn’t require abstinence.

After 20 years of fighting and failing to get sober using abstinence-based methods, journalist Katie Herzog found a simple, inexpensive, and effective way to take control over alcohol.

Part memoir, part guidebook, Drink Your Way Sober shares Herzog’s recovery journey as well her keen observations of drinking and life. She dives into the science and history of addiction treatment to discover why we treat alcohol use disorder the way we do—and why abstinence-based programs like Alcohol Anonymous don’t always work. Through candid first-person reporting, Herzog outlines a simple guide for others to:

  • Use an evidence-based protocol to take control of their drinking and break free from cravings
  • Explore alternatives to AA and other abstinence-based programs
  • Gain support from family and friends
  • Reap the benefits of a low-alcohol or sober lifestyle, including improved health, relationships, and mental well-being

Blending humor, heartbreak, and refreshing honesty, Drink Your Way Sober offers a relatable and exhaustively researched account of a transformative approach to recovery with tips on how you can drink yourself sober too.

Excellent book, can’t believe this information isn’t more widely known. I’ve already bought copies for loved ones.

Practical approach to reducing or quitting alcohol

Thankfully I don’t need this book for myself but after reading it I bought several copies to give to people who it might help. After a long term relationship with someone who couldn’t stay sober ended (many years ago) I realized that more solutions were needed. I am grateful that this method is now available. Alcoholism is a terribly destructive condition to everyone it touches. If this helps some people get control of their drinking it is a blessing to us all.

This book will help many people

This book is a personal history of the author’s experience in finding a cure for her alcoholism. The Sinclair Method worked for her and she examines other treatments and medications through the research and personal histories of friends and acquaintances.

This was a pleasure to listen to. I could hear Katie’s humor and dry delivery in the excellent professional narration. Great job to the speaker. The book weaves in Katie’s personal struggle with alcoholism with the history and method of the naltrexone medicinal treatment. Interesting and entertaining. She is also fair about Alcoholics Anonymous, giving credit to it when deserved.

heartfelt, funny, informative

I don’t drink, but still found this book very interesting. It is the first thing that I have read the really helped me understand why some people keep drinking even after it starts destroying or hurting them. It is also just a fun read about science and someone’s life.

Worth listening to

Hertzog really wrote a super informative book here. I had no idea there was a virtual cure for alcoholism. If you listen to her podcast, you can actually imagine her voice throughout the book. That said, the voice actor did a good job.

so informative

This book is marketed as a self help book for people with trouble with booze. But to me, it’s just a really interesting science story. It’s a case study in how a solid treatment for a major disease can exist and then not get implemented, due to path dependence and people’s intuitions for what a cure should look like (or whether a cure should even be possible). It’s a problem that exists in medicine and other fields more broadly, so it’s valuable to learn about this especially stark, mind-bending case.

Katie writes brilliantly. The book is funny, concise, and full of good stories. A lot of the jokes made me laugh out loud. She said it was great when she realized she could have fun at a party without getting drunk, and “didn’t have to wonder the next day who I offended. (I knew who I offended, and she deserved it.)”

Great book, easy recommendation.

Not just for alcoholics. Just a good book.
