One of the most poignant reasons to read the book is stated in Chapter 2 (slightly paraphrased for length): “We read labels. We shun gluten, dairy, processed foods, and refined sugars. We buy organic, use natural sunscreen, and worry about fluoride in our water and smog in our air. We do yoga and run, SoulCycle and Fitbit, we do Paleo and Keto, we juice, we cleanse. We follow Goop and drop $40 on an exercise class because there are healing crystals in the floor. We are on an endless and expensive quest for wellness. … And we drink f***ing rocket fuel.”

Does that speak to you? The Fitbit-obsessed label-reader in me feels very called out. QLAW is well-researched and includes information on a variety of topics, from neuropathways and the importance of nutrition to navigating complicated familial relations and the impact of the cultural marginalization of women and other groups such as POC and LGBTQIA+ communities. (Yes, drinking is a feminist issue. If you wanna stick it to the patriarchy, start here.)

That said, regardless of your gender or relationship with alcohol, if you want to have a balanced, healthy life, aware of the marketing and cultural messages you're bombarded with about alcohol, this book is for you.

Just listened to the audio version of this book. Wow. It is so enlightening and listening to it read by the author is the way to go-her raw honesty and passion add to the impact of her story. This is an incredibly important and timely book-one which I believe I will never forget.

I cried three times in the first chapter. The information just completely hit home for me and I loved the perspective provided throughout. I was, no I am, provoked in the best way possible.

I selected this book as a means of learning more about addiction from the female perspective - and the book accomplished it.

Whether you are drinker or a non-drinker, there is insight to be pondered in these pages (not only on substance use, but on socio-political and cultural ideologies too). I am not going to lie, I was not sure if I really liked the style of writing when I first began listening. Whitaker’s words could be felt as jarring, possibly combative, and a bit off-topic at times, or so I thought. However, by the second half of the book, Whitaker provided good resources and insight to consider, which greatly change my overall experience of the book from my initial hesitation I felt during the beginning.

I appreciated Whitaker’s honesty and boldness to light some fires. I just had to take a step back from the flames when it got too hot, but I remained transfixed on the light of her message and found comfort in its overall warmth.

Helped me deal with the frustration and stagnancy I found in AA and opened my eyes to what I always thought; I do have to power I just have to find what works for me to be happy and live life without wanting to drink, and a life that doesn’t have to be devoted to one sole path and revolve around it. It reminded me sometimes I do and usually know what’s best for me

I come from a family that places high value on drinking. Half of my family is Italian and love getting together and drinking wine and eating food, the other half is Mexican and love getting together and taking shots and drinking beer and eating food. Ever since I can remember, all of the good times in my life have had alcohol as a side car. I realized that there was a lot of neglect happening, a lot of negative things in my life that were a result of alcohol, a lot of trauma, and really wanted to break the pattern, especially because I have a daughter of my own, who has had the displeasure of watching these patterns as well.

Before I read this book, I couldn’t imagine what quitting drinking would look like, especially when many of my most important relationships rely heavily on alcohol to sustain themselves. I was never a daily drinker, more of a social/party type of drinker, but I still woke up with hangovers most Sundays and binge drink with friends and family in front of my young daughter. When I was no longer OK with that anymore, I crossed paths with this book. Thank goodness I did.

Holly Whitaker’s words really helped prepare me for the solitude I would need to take once I quit drinking. Her words helped me stop thinking I’m fine and should keep drinking, just because I’m nothing like the alcoholic uncles and sisters and aunts and father and mother in my life. They also helped me answer “why aren’t you drinking” genuinely with “I just prefer not to,” because her words also helped me see that sobriety is everything we hoped drunkenness would be, and that someone asking me to take a drink is essentially like if I was on my way to Hawaii and someone called me from Death Valley saying “Don’t go to your dream destination! Come out here and hang out with me in the desert with no water and no guaranteed way home or headed anywhere certain! Let’s risk dying out here together instead of going someplace amazing and beautiful and new!”

Anyways, yes, read it. Even if you’re a man, or if you’re not into hearing about feminism and activism, read it anyway. The connections she makes may surprise you and this take on addiction treatment might save you. I am so glad I found this book, it will forever be a huge steppingstone in my journey and my daughter’s.

My alcohol quitting journey started in ‘17 and the way others acted or reacted about it has been the hardest part to move through. Holly perfectly depicts so much of my journey, especially the social or people part. Listening to this was like having a conversation with someone who’s walked a mile in my shoes. Looking forward to practicing some of Holly’s suggestions in my daily life. Thankful for this read/listen!
