I had to know what happened next

The world building was really good, the characters were dynamic. I definitely recommend reading the content warnings before listening to the book.

Beautiful Depressing Story- glad I listened

Will you need a mind numbing rom com after this book? Definitely. Is it worth it to push through all of the pain and misery in the MMCs life? Yes.
I love the story. It is very dark and depressing. I would listen to this book for hours and I think I got into a funk to be honest. I do think it could have been shortened, mostly because I was just wanting the misery to end.

Hauntingly Epic

A dark journey through necromancy, war and love. This is the best book I’ve read this year! This is for lovers of magic and tragedy. I hope they make this into a movie.

I love this story

this is one of my top reads for 2025! I love the way the characters are written. they are definitely fully fleshed out and not shallow.the plot is complicated and the magic system is unique. Will be recommending this one to friends.

just finished the audiobook, I really feel like i listened to the life of Helen . I wouldn’t mind a sequel novella of their daughter going to school. And gosh! The ending tore me up, I kept wondering when I was going to cry because I kept seeing people crying. I can’t believe how Helen was listed as a non combatant, that broke me a little inside. Having family with PTSD from the military I could see that they struggled after the war, especially because of the torture they endured. But what a AWESOME book. I’m so excited that this will be a movie and they better not screw it up.

amazing world building

as soon as it was over restarted it again. perfect storytelling, every character has depth and personality

Heart wrenching

This is an EPIC war time dark fantasy novel with an incredible, extremely mapped out, complex magic system. It’s almost mind numbing how much intricate the world building is in this book with everything from sciences, magics, theologies and religions explained in depth. Deep dives into PTSD and the violent mental and physical abuses that caused them and the way the characters healed or couldn’t from all the trauma they received during and post war times. That being said there is a romantic SUB PLOT, and it’s is beautiful and extremely stressful and times. (Had me nail biting and tearing up)
I loved this book and it was well worth the listen!

This is my Roman Empire. Senlinyu give us a masterclass in writing morally grey characters. Beautifully written. Masterfully crafted. Performed flawlessly. Emotionally resonant. A true work of art. The characters and story will stick with you forever. 5 stars. Highly recommend.

Well written captivating story

Listened to this after Manacled, so it was easier to get into the story, knowing how it would progress. The original world-building added a fresh perspective, while the heart of the story remained as brilliant as before

Truly an amazing read

Words truly can’t describe the journey this book takes you on. Your attention to captured in the first sentence. It tears you apart and then puts you back together again. It is a work of art that makes you view the world differently when you’ve finished. The way everything is brought full circle is truly amazing and mind boggling just how the author brings it together in the end. I would 100% recommend this book to all fantasy readers.
