The Terrorists is the last Martin Beck mystery, finished just a few weeks before Per Wahlöö’s death. The book is, in effect, a marvelous summing up of the series. The story centers on the visit of an American senator to Stockholm. Martin Beck tries to protect him from an international gang of terrorists, while they decide that Beck too should be removed from the scene.

When Viktor Palmgren, a powerful Swedish industrialist, is shot during his after-dinner speech in the luxurious Hotel Savoy, it sends a shiver down the spine of the international money markets and puts the tiny town of Malmö on edge. The Martin Beck books are widely acknowledged as some of the most influential detective novels ever written. Written by Swedish husband and wife team Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö between 1965 and 1975, the 10-book series set a gold standard for all subsequent Scandinavian crime fiction. Ein Mann erschießt sich. Neben dem Selbstmörder liegt ein Zettel mit dem Namen »Martin Beck«. Kurz darauf gerät in der Sköldgatan ein Haus durch eine Explosion in Brand. Die meisten Bewohner können gerettet werden, da die Polizei einen der Mieter beschattete: Den Autodieb Göran Malm, der in den Flammen ums Leben kommt. Die Obduktion ergibt, dass Malm den Gashahn in seiner Wohnung öffnete. Ein weiterer Selbstmord also. Doch dann entdecken die Experten vom Branddezernat Reste eines Zeitzünders in Malms Matratze, und auf Kommissar Beck und seine Kollegen wartet plötzlich eine Menge Arbeit.

In Stockholm prallt ein Bus kurz vor der Endstation gegen einen Zaun. Doch der Busfahrer und seine acht Insassen waren schon vorher tot. Ihre Körper sind durch Maschinengewehrschüsse bis zur Unkenntlichkeit entstellt. War Stenström der Lösung eines alten, längst zu den Akten gelegten Falls zu nahe gekommen?

Bereits zwei kleine Mädchen wurden in die Parkanlagen gelockt und ermordet. Die Stockholmer Polizei fahndet auf Hochtouren nach dem Sexualstraftäter – doch der Erfolg bleibt aus. Um dem Mörder auf die Spur zu kommen, müssen sich Kommissar Martin Beck und seine Kollegen auf die Hilfe eines Handtaschendiebs verlassen, der in der Nähe des Tatorts eine Frau überfallen und den Triebtäter möglicherweise gesehen hat.

In einem Hotel in Malmö wird der Konzernchef eines großen Unternehmens vor den Augen der anderen Gäste erschossen. Zunächst verhört die Stockholmer Polizei die Gäste des »Savoy«. Doch niemand hat den Mörder erkannt oder vermag ihn genau zu beschreiben. Also muss Martin Beck die Ermittlungen übernehmen.

Fünf Männer überlegen fieberhaft, an welcher Stelle Stockholms sich am Besten ein Attentat auf den hochrangigen Gast aus den USA durchführen ließe. Das Ganze ist ein Planspiel, und die fünf Männer sind schwedische Polizisten – vorerst. Denn in Stockholm ist die internationale Terroristenorganisation ULAG aktiv. Ihr Kennzeichen: eine ungeheuerliche Brutalität, die schon viele Unbeteiligte das Leben gekostet hat. Doch ist bei ihren Aktionen keine politische Zielrichtung erkennbar – die Opfer waren bisher Liberale und Konservative, Faschisten und Kommunisten.

Der schwedische Reporter Alf Matsson verschwindet auf einer Reise nach Ungarn spurlos. Gepäck und Pass hat er im Hotel zurückgelassen, doch von ihm fehlt jede Spur. Die ungarische Polizei tappt im Dunkeln. Kommissar Martin Beck von der Stockholmer Kriminalpolizei reist inoffiziell nach Budapest, um den rätselhaften Fall aufzuklären. Doch kaum angekommen, wird er von Unbekannten brutal zusammengeschlagen. Jemand versucht mit allen Mitteln zu verhindern, dass die Wahrheit ans Licht kommt.

Eine Leiche wird aus dem Götakanal geborgen. Sie kann nur wenige Tage im Schlamm des Schleusenbeckens gelegen haben – noch immer erkennt man, dass die junge Frau dunkelhaarig und hübsch war. Wie die Obduktion ergibt, wurde sie vor ihrem Tod misshandelt. Tatort: unbekannt. Die Kriminalbeamten stehen vor einem absoluten Rätsel, weil niemand die Frau zu vermissen scheint. Nicht einmal ihr Name kann ermittelt werden. Aber Kommissar Martin Beck gibt nicht auf. Und allmählich erwacht die Tote zum Leben.
