Story
When the last honest citizen of Poisonville was murdered, the Continental Op stayed on to punish the guilty--even if that meant taking on an entire town. Red Harvest is more than a superb crime novel: it is a classic exploration of corruption and violence in the American grain. From the author of The Maltese Falcon.

Story
When Ben Orton's head is found bludgeoned by a heavy flower pot, the people of La Caleta are stunned - not because their police chief has been murdered, but because no one thought to do it sooner. A bruising, violent man, Ben had a commitment to order, but often not law. But as insurance investigator Dave Brandstetter is about to find out, the corruption in Ben's police force did not die with him. By the time Dave arrives, a young activist has already been arrested for the murder. Only Dave seems to care that the evidence against the accused is laughably thin.

Even though Agatha Raisin loathes amateur dramatics, her friend Mrs. Bloxby, the vicar's wife, has persuaded her to support the local pantomime. Stifling a yawn at the production of Babes in the Woods, Agatha watches as the baker, playing an ogre, struts and threatens on the stage. Then a trapdoor opens… followed by a scream and then silence. Surely, this isn't the way the scene was rehearsed?

But Scudder has starred in short fiction as well, and it's all here, from a pair of late-'70s novelettes ("Out the Window" and "A Candle for the Bag Lady") through "By the Dawn's Early Light" (Edgar) and "The Merciful Angel of Death" (Shamus), all the way to "One Last Night at Grogan's", a moving and elegiac story never before published.
