Beckles Willson was a journalist at the front during World War I (1916). In this book he relates the story of Canadians as they fought against a massive German attack, and then mounted a counterattack during the battle of the Ypres Salient.

Soon after dawn on July 1, 1916, British and Commonwealth troops climbed out of damp, muddy trenches in the Somme valley and began to advance across no-man’s land toward German positions.
