Wanted to Love it

I really wanted to love this book, I love the idea. I just didn’t find myself caring about the characters. I love a strong lead, and I didn’t feel like I got that I didn’t feel like I need to know more about the story. I really enjoy YA, especially with a female lead. I love Rick Riordan, Suzanne Collins, and urban fantasy style lit. This just felt like it needed more editing and development. There were moments that I was completely confused and maybe that’s because I was listening instead of reading, I will give my chance and try reading instead of just listening.

Overall Celina Marquez wrote a great story.

Overall Celina Marquez wrote a great story in The Serpent's Daughter. It took me a little bit to get into the book but once I got hooked, I got hooked. Celina does a great job developing the main character, the supporting characters, world, and the plot/story. Audio Version: This was my first time listening to Nanette Gonzales and she does a great job with the individual characters and overall story.

Good story; terrible narration

Note: I received a free copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

After winning a championship basketball game, Sasi finds herself somehow transported to a strange, new realm. When she is discovered there, she is taken to the realm's rulers where she is treated well. She learns about a prophecy and a war that is looming. However, as she explores the castle, she begins to notice things that make her question whether or not she can believe what she's been told. Escaping the castle, Sasi seeks out friends who can help her locate the shards of prophecy. Not only does her search take her back to her own realm on Earth, but it raises questions about just how involved her own mother is in the prophecy.

I enjoyed the story for the most part. It didn't grab hold of me and force me to keep listening, but it was interesting enough that I definitely wanted to find out what would happen next. It is a book that I think teenagers would enjoy reading. The mystery behind the prophecy and Sasi's own connection to it were neat ideas that were handled well. There were also places where I was laughing out loud - particularly when they first arrive back in Sasi's own realm and they discover that not everyone arrived ready to go out in public.

That being said, if you are interested in this book, get the ebook. Do not listen to the audiobook. This was obviously Nanette Gonzalez's first time narrating an audiobook as there were numerous misreadings and mistakes made in the narration. It is also obvious that she did not use a proofer, as they were all things that a proofer would have caught for her to correct before publishing it. In addition, many of the chapters had a low background hum or fuzz that made it difficult to pay attention to the actual story. I ended up having to listen to several chapters twice just to be able to understand what was going on. All in all, listening to the audiobook was just like listening to a live read of the book by someone who has never read a story out loud before.

As a final note, I am giving the review an overall rating of 3 stars, with 1 star for the narration and 4 stars for the story. On Goodreads, you may notice that my review is 4 stars. That is because the review is tied to the Kindle edition; there isn't an Audiobook edition to rate there. The story garners 4 stars from me, both here and there. It is the terrible narration that pulls down the overall rating here.

The world and characters were described great to be able to understand and feel what was happening. I would recommend this book to anyone.

Good start to a new series

Fun and unique worldbuilding. The characters and plot are spun out through the book, and held my interest throughout. Sasi had a steep learning curve, but she handled each new situation, and even an entirely different world, with aplomb as she for her best to figure out the mysterious prophecy. I would have liked spending more time learning the magic of the world, but Sasi figured that out pretty easily.
For the most part, Nanette Gonzales did well with the narration and voices, however there were a few mistakes, and a distracting hum in the background at times.
