The next novella in the New York Times bestselling Sworn Soldier series, featuring Alex Easton investigating the dark, mysterious depths of a coal mine in America.

"The audiobook narrated by Avi Roque is delightful." —BuzzFeed News on What Moves the Dead

Alex Easton does not want to visit America.

They particularly do not want to visit an abandoned coal mine in West Virginia with a reputation for being haunted.

But when their old friend Dr. Denton summons them to help find his lost cousin—who went missing in that very mine—well, sometimes a sworn soldier has to do what a sworn soldier has to do...

Love Alex the main character, they’re a delight. I enjoyed how the various characters and relationships were presented. I am mildly claustrophobic and parts of this were very unnerving. The horror this time is a combination of setting and monster and both parts are excellent. I got exactly what I wanted from this book and as usual the narrator did a wonderful job.

I enjoyed the book itself, but the narrator made really bad choices. They gave the main character a very unnatural and robotic voice. The cadence and flow was unbearable. It felt like a bad AI reading of the book. Not for every character, just the main character and their inner monologue, which is a significant portion of the book.

Robot voice?
