Acerca de esta escucha

When a party of goblin warriors find themselves trapped behind enemy lines, it'll take more than whining (and a bemused Elven veterinarian) to get them home again.

Nine Goblins is a novella of low . . . very low . . . fantasy.

I stumbled upon this book by sheer chance. The characters, the plot, and the world building are excellent, and the performance of the narrator is outstanding. I rarely encounter a book with such vivid and engaging accents for the characters. Five stars!

Excellent story, excellent performance

Every character practically jumped off the page with individuality. I really enjoyed them all but especially Sings to Trees and the goblin sergeant. I liked that even though it’s set in the middle of a war the story isn’t really about the war. It was great to see what people were feeling about everything and that what happened looks like it will lead to change. If T Kingfisher ever revisited this world I’d be happy to go back again. As with nearly everything she has written I highly recommend this book, buy it already 😁

Excellent characters

Oh my gosh, this book was so much fun! I love the author’s take on goblins - just your typical “grunts” in the army, but with their own cultural and individual quirks. They’re actually quite lovable! The long-suffering sergeant, the competent corporal, the bickering twins, the (literal) teddy bear! Oh, and the one who can’t keep his finger out of his bodily orifices! 😂

And then there’s the elves, especially Sings-to-Trees, the very overworked and put-upon veterinarian with a heart of gold. His scenes were very humorous!

The wizards were actually quite scary, and resulted in the only non-humorous parts of the book. These scenes were actually pretty difficult to listen to, but thankfully, they were brief.

The whole book had the feel of a Terry Pratchett Discworld book, and I say that as a huge compliment! Not every author can pull of that particular flavor of wry humor, but Kingfisher has done it spectacularly! Bravo!

One quibble with the narration: He pronounced “queue” as “coo”. At least that’s what I thought he was referring to when he said “coo”. It was very confusing at first. I thought he could have done a better job differentiating the various goblins, but it was serviceable.

Overall, I highly recommend it! And I beg the author to write more about this group of goblins!

So much fun! (But a little grim in places)
