Publisher's summary
Two days before Christmas 1996, the broken, battered body of Sophie Toscan du Plantier was found outside her vacation home in West Cork, a serene region on Ireland’s idyllic southern coast. Decades later, no one has been charged with the murder, but the aggrieved inhabitants of West Cork are convinced they know who did it - and he still lives among them.
In this haunting and heartbreaking true crime series, reporter Sam Bungey and documentarian Jennifer Forde revisit the grisly homicide that left Ireland reeling. Featuring unprecedented research and extensive, exclusive interviews with the case’s key players, their work offers new insight on the still unsolved murder and the labyrinth investigation that followed. The result is an evocative audio portrait as gripping and intriguing as the case it unravels.

Story
Jean McConville's abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.

Story
Shots rang out in Savannah's grandest mansion in the misty, early morning hours of May 2, 1981. Was it murder or self-defense? For nearly a decade, the shooting and its aftermath reverberated throughout this hauntingly beautiful city of moss-hung oaks and shaded squares. John Berendt's sharply observed, suspenseful, and witty narrative flows like a thoroughly engrossing novel, and yet it is a work of nonfiction.

Terrific Tale!
I REALLY liked this podcast! Not only is it a mesmerizing story, but the way it was put together kept my interest throughout. The only thing I didn't like (because I listen to multiple sections of the podcast at a time) was the minute or so intro between each, citing the producers, authors, etc. But I just hit the advance 30 second button twice and that took care of the issue. True crime, small Irish village, gossip, rumors, quirky folks, incompetent police, and more. Would love more of this type of offering.

Amazing!
A truly gripping account of a terrible tragedy. Worth looking for books written about this case.

Still curious...
...I am left wondering why anyone would find the ‘main suspect’ as suspect. To me it seemed others were not looked at or they were thrown out to soon. Who ever murdered her, it had to be someone who knew her because it was a passionate murder and those usually occur with people close to a victim. Seems to me that Mr Bailey is clearly a scapegoat...especially with all the errors made.

Well Presented
From what I can tell it was better resented than the legal case from either side.

This is a Podcast. And it's fantastic!
There are so many reviews complaining about the format of this "audiobook" that I can only assume people have either listened to so many audio books they have forgotten how to actually read the descriptions, or most Audible listeners are ignorant of what a podcast actually is. Each episode of a podcast is supposed to state the title, the content, the host, directors/producers etc. Literally EVERY podcast ever does this.
Anyway, disregarding people's ignorant ranting, this story is fantastic. I love a good true crime whodunit podcast and West Cork is definitely that. The story is captivating and haunting and Sam and Jennifer do an excellent job of looking at all sides of this story. I highly recommend!

Podcast - Not an Audiobook
It's not bad, but it felt like I was listening to a "Dateline" episode. You would think that is great since I love to watch "Dateline", but I found that the visual story is as necessary as the audio. I finished at the middle of the listen and haven't wanted to go back.
To those that don't mind a Podcast, several reviews suggest it will be enjoyable. I can't get past my preference for listening to a well-developed book.

Overall rating 3.5 out of 5 stars
Would you consider the audio edition of West Cork to be better than the print version?
No and Yes.
Any additional comments?
I give the overall rating 3.5 stars just cause I enjoy listening to podcasts, which is what West Cork is- a podcast. I definitely enjoy the overall performance of West Cork even though, there are some parts that I don't- like how annoying the credits at the end of each chapter is. But I'm warning you, If you hate podcast, you'll hate West Cork. Because truthfully, there's nothing special about this one because how similar this is to a regular podcast. And the biased report that's provided, why am I not even surprised?
But oh well, everyone has their own preferences and West Cork is free for a limited time, so I definitely recommend you to give it a chance.

Intriguing and frustrating true story.
It took me a while to feel involved with the interview format of this story, but once I did so, I was totally taken with it. The frustration I mentioned in my headline stems from the lack of resolution in this fascinating, tragic case, not from the production itself, which is very well done. I didn't much care for the occasional background tonal music. But I got used to it and eventually stopped noticing the music entirely. I liked this Audible production very much.
