Publisher's Summary

Rob Paulsen is one of Hollywood's busiest, most talented, and most passionate performers. If you don't know him by name, you will know him by the many characters he has brought to life: Pinky from Pinky and the Brain and Yakko from Animaniacs, the tough but loveable Raphael from the original animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and many more.

So, you can imagine how terrifying it must have been when Rob was diagnosed with throat cancer, putting his entire livelihood in jeopardy and threatening to rob the world of all his loveable characters that filled our youth and adulthood with humor and delight.

Voice Lessons tells the heartwarming and life-affirming story of Rob's experience with an aggressive cancer treatment and recovery regimen, which luckily led to a full recovery. Rob quickly returned to doing what he loves most, but with a much deeper appreciation of what he came so close to losing. His new lease on life inspired him to rededicate himself to his fans, particularly the new friends he made along the way: hundreds of sick children and their families. Rob said it best himself: "I can not only continue to make a living, but make a difference, and I can't wait to use that on the biggest scale that I can."

Gifted performer. A engaging life story

Rob Paulsen has written an inspiring, honest and engaging account of his personal, professional ups and downs as a performer. Hearing him narrate "Voice Lessons" gave his life story (and his many characters) all the attention and weight needed for me to embrace his account and his journey from budding rock star to commerical success as an actor and singer. If Yakko, Pinky, Raphael, Carl Wheezer, or any of the hundreds of hours of animated entertainment he's attached to mean anything to you, you owe it to yourself to listen to "Voice Lessons."

Rob Paulsen is Fantastic!

I grew up watching most of Rob Paulsen's shows, so I already love him. Pinky is possibly my all-time favorite cartoon character, and the theme song's for Animaniacs and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles take me back to a time when things were significantly less complicated. Additionally, I am a voice actor, and Rob Paulsen is someone that I have been holding up as one of the gold standards of cartoon voice acting. All this is to say that I went into this already really liking him as an actor, but this book made me admire him as a person. His kindness and generous spirit just shine through and leave one astounded.

So, gushing aside, who is going to like this book?

His cartoon fans: Hearing such a familiar voice telling you about his life story is a bit wild, in a very positive way.

Voice Actors: He doesn't set out a "here's how you do it plan," but the book is peppered with so many insights into what it is like to be a top voice actor in Hollywood and how even when you are at the top, there is no guarantee of tomorrow. Also, you have to constantly work on your craft.

Finally, people who just enjoy a good story.

Cowabunga!

Getting to know a voice I've related to and been familiar with since childhood was an absolute trip. I spent the majority of his story on the verge of happy-tears, then real (sad) ones, then happy ones again. there's a good chance I'll come back to this one anytime I'm in need of some life advice and a little extra turtle power <3

Had me tear up a couple times

Don't know how people who don't know Rob Paulsen would feel, but as a long time fan of the cartoons & characters he's done, I got a bit emotional a couple times while hearing his story.
I loved it, and would recommend this to others who admire voice actors as much as the characters they play.

A Must Listen.

Rob Paulsen was a recent guest in a voice acting class Im subscribed to (Steve Blum’s) and hearing him talk about his career and what he went through during his cancer treatments made me wanna pick this up. This is a valuable source of great stories of when was a singer for rock band, to becoming the voice of many iconic cartoon characters, and how it all led to him battling throat cancer, and the lessons he learned along way. Lots of laughs and impactful emotions are what you can expect hear, and I hope those who listen to this audiobook will take these “voice lessons” to heart after listening. I know I will.

Voice Lessons from a Master Toon

Rob Paulsen is a lot of things. He's a brilliant performer, loving husband and father, advocate for people who have lived their whole lives with diseases and disabilities.

He's also a major part of many people's childhoods. From Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, to Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, Jimmy Neutron and other shows, Rob has voiced characters that are seminal within the annals of animation.

His life and story are profoundly moving. This is a man who is humble to a fault, kind, caring, and all around utterly amazing human being.

Hearing him narrate everything is fascinating, because when he talks about each event, each person he has met and each role he has taken on and developed, it really comes from the heart. Listeners will quite literally hear the emotion come through.

Truly this is a life story for the ages and one wherein we all learn some powerful voice lessons.
