Publisher's summary

“Stephen Hunter is in a class by himself. Time to Hunt is as vivid and haunting as a moving target in the crosshairs of a sniper scope.” (Nelson Demille, author of Mayday)

He is the most dangerous man alive. He only wants to live in peace with his family and forget the war that nearly killed him....

It's not going to happen.

Stephen Hunter's epic national best sellers Point of Impact and Black Light introduced millions to Bob Lee Swagger, called "Bob the Nailer", a heroic but flawed Vietnam War veteran forced twice to use his skills as a master sniper to defend his life and his honor. Now, in his grandest, most intensely thrilling adventure yet, Bob the Nailer must face his deadliest foe from Vietnam - and his own demons - to save his wife and daughter.

During the latter days of the Vietnam War, deep in-country, a young idealistic marine named Donny Fenn was cut down by a sniper's bullet as he set out on patrol with Swagger, who himself received a grievous wound. Years later Swagger married Donny's widow, Julie, and together they raised their daughter, Nikki, on a ranch in the isolated Sawtooth Mountains in Idaho. Although he struggles with the painful legacy of Vietnam, Swagger's greatest wish - to leave his violent past behind and live quietly with his family - seems to have come true.

Then one idyllic day, a man, a woman, and a girl set out from the ranch on horseback. High on a ridge above a mountain pass, a thousand yards distant, a calm, cold-eyed shooter, one of the world's greatest marksmen, peers through a telescopic sight at the three approaching figures.

Out of his tortured past, a mortal enemy has once again found Bob the Nailer. Time to Hunt proves anew why so many consider Stephen Hunter to be our best living thriller writer. With a plot that sweeps from the killing fields of Vietnam to the corridors of power in Washington to the shadowy plots of the new world order, Hunter delivers all the complex, stay-up-all-night action his fans demand in a masterful tale of family heartbreak and international intrigue - and shows why, for Bob Lee Swagger, it's once again time to hunt.

Praise for Time to Hunt

“Stephen Hunter is simply the best writer of action fiction in the world and Time to Hunt proves it.” (Phillip Margolin, author of The Burning Man)

“The best straight-up thriller writer at work today.” (Rocky Mountain News)

Go slow to go fast

What made the experience of listening to Time to Hunt the most enjoyable?

well developed story line

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

very slow start, only made relevant by time and development of plot. i almost quit listening...glad i did not!

Any additional comments?

Arguably, one of the best of steven hunter's works. I almost quit listening as the development of the plot took tremendous effort and pages. very slow beginning made relevant by building plot and story line. ending was a whopper not seen coming wow.

The poor narration.

I loved the novel. The narrator was okay but his accents and various voices were horrible. His constant mispronunciation of Boise was a constant grating on my nerves. ( there is no z in Boise). Read the book, skip the audible.

Amazing book.

This book is unique, as it feels like two books in one. The story was very entertaining and showed real struggle by the protagonist and his ability to solve problems. Highly recommend.

Simply awesome.

I cannot believe how a book about a gritty blue collar guy who happens to be a sniper could make me so emotionally invested. I admire the authors patriotism and how he appreciates men who have served.

Very well done

I should have listened to the authors three previous books before. This one is very good as a stand alone. I’m anxious to find out more about Bobby Lee!

Simply amazing

The author writes with such purpose and emotion, writing in both the present and the past. Oftentimes, when reading other works, there is clearly a stronger narrative and a weaker narrative. Not so with this author! Extremely entertaining, and even mostly technically accurate!

Mixed Review

Good book, well narrated by Jon Lindstrom EXCEPT when in-character as Bob Lee Swagger. The accent sounded nothing like a person raised in rural Polk County, Arkansas. One line in the book referenced Bob Lee Swagger’s accent; “he sounds like Gomer Pyle”. A Gomer Pyle accent, while not one common to western Arkansas, would have been less distracting.

This is the second Jon Lindstrom narrated Bob Lee Swagger book that I have listened to. While I enjoyed Lindstrom’s narration for the most part, his Bob Lee Swagger accent is so bad that I will not listen to another book in this series that is narrated by Lindstrom.

A really good listen, one of my favorites!

This is my fourth book by this author in the Bob Lee story line and it is my absolute favorite. I enjoyed the story telling that wove between the past and the present, between one story line and then another, blending them into one enjoyable listen. My hats off to the narrator, great job. I'll wait awhile until I do the next book in the series, want to remember this one for a while.

Time to Hunt

Why weren't police officers or the military sent to protect Bob Swagger's wife, daughter and aunt when the military found out that they were in imminent danger and the Russian sniper, Solaratov, was in the area setting up to kill her (them)? Instead the military and Swagger came up with an elaborate plan to have Swagger parachute into snowy and rocky mountains where Solaratov was to kill Swagger's wife. This part of the audio story didn't make sense to me.

But on the whole the book was excellent. The reader was excellent and Stephen Hunter's writing and story telling were, as usual, superb and exciting. I enjoy listening to and reading Hunter's books about Bob Swagger.
