Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. Publisher's summary
A second chance...
In the windswept sands of the Middle East, Paul Chardy fought side by side with Ulu Beg: one, a charismatic, high-strung CIA covert warrior, the other a ferocious freedom fighter. Then Chardy fell into the hands of the enemy, and Beg was betrayed. Now the two men are about to meet again.
A second gun...
Beg has come over the Mexican border under a hail of bullets - determined to assassinate a leading American political figure and avenge his people's betrayal. The CIA wants Chardy to stop the hit. Chardy wants to save Beg's life.
Between the two men is a tragic past, a failed mission, and a woman who knew them in war - and who knows their secrets now. Around both men is a conspiracy of lies and violence that reaches back to the Cold War. But as Beg moves in for his kill and as Chardy breaks loose from his handlers, a terrible truth begins to emerge: somewhere, someone wants both men to die.

I can NOT believe this is stephen hunter
The narration was poor, but I could NOT follow this story! I re listened to several sections and may, relisten to the whole book. I can't even say what it was about! Some guy that was betrayed some time in the past coming back to avenge betrayal? Something like that. Maybe it was the lack of voice changes or something. It sounded like a Reacher book. Maybe it was the similarity of all the hundreds of similar books out there, I really don't know but this book is HORRIBLE.

Stephen Hunter Master of Intrique
Even though "The Second Saladin" was only Hunter's second book it showed great promise of things to come. Even though the descriptions of weapons and shooting techniques were no where as developed as they would become in his Bob Lee Swagger novels they were still there. I found the story line good but convoluted. I didn't like the constant changing between first and last names when he referred to his characters. It was confusing. All in all it was a pretty good story, although a bit slow at first. The story's narrator,Dick Hill, did a great job.

Well worth a listen.
One of Stephen Hunter's early entries in a writing career that has spanned 40 years this is a surprisingly dark and lurid espionage tale.
I find this to be my favourite of his novels as the protagonist Paul Chardy goes on a redemption arc that is not particularly easy or enjoyable but believable and cathartic.
The plotting is intricate enough to warrent multiple listenings as it centres on a denouement that I felt was brilliant on my first reading.
The narration is delivered very well with plenty of character and naunce. It really captures the urban environment and historic setting.
Overall I would highly recommend this story for those who would like to hear a more raw and brutal story from Stephen Hunter.

In the fall of 1888, Jack the Ripper slaughtered five prostitutes in London's seamy Whitechapel District. He did not just kill - he ripped with a butcher's glee - and then, after the particularly gruesome slaying of Mary Jane Kelly, he disappeared. For 127 years, Jack has haunted the dark corners of our imagination, the paradigm of the psychotic killer. We remember him not only for his crimes, but because, despite one of the biggest dragnets in London history, he was never caught.

Story
In the fall of 1888, Jack the Ripper slaughtered five prostitutes in London's seamy Whitechapel District. He did not just kill - he ripped with a butcher's glee - and then, after the particularly gruesome slaying of Mary Jane Kelly, he disappeared. For 127 years, Jack has haunted the dark corners of our imagination, the paradigm of the psychotic killer. We remember him not only for his crimes, but because, despite one of the biggest dragnets in London history, he was never caught.

A world in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides - or are chosen.
