Publisher's Summary

Thomas was no one, an orphan with no past and no memories of his early life. The only clue lies in the strange birthmark on his chest, a mark that may or may not reveal his origin, but will certainly guide him to his destiny.

Growing to manhood he will become a man of consequence and influence, yet the greatest gift he has to offer his people lies not in his power, but in his wisdom. As he strives to reach his potential he will face obstacles great and small and he will discover that some foes are too strong to defeat with power alone.

The greatest of evils can only be stopped when those true of heart are willing to sacrifice blood, tears, and sometimes - their lives.

Way to close to religion for my taste

Devils, demons, losing soul to the devil, priests. A bit to catholic and I had enough of that growing up.

Disney and CW Storyline

I had high hopes for this book, but like many modern storylines, this fell short of anything substantial. Instead this weak entry focused on the Alpha Female saving the Beta Male trope.

Do yourself a favor and bypass this WB level garbage.

good story, eh narrator

I liked his voice and character range but the whispered everything-is-important narration got old. I know it's a choice, he's capable of not doing it. The characters don't always have that extra lilt at the end of a sentence, indicating every sentence is meant to have shock value.

Excellent story just needed to be a few hours longer,it seemed to be rushed.

3/4 of a story.
Needs more character development and relationship building to truest bring this story to life.

intriguing

felt like a special tribute to d&d, where the roles, backstories, and adventure all came together and formed a great story.

Ehhhhh

Ok it wasn't terrible terrible.... Let's start with the narrator. He was decent. He did voices really well, but while reading he ended his sentences with an unnatural lilt that got REALLY annoying. Like he was asking a question in regular sentences. The story was good... I guess. There could've been more character and world development. I liked the ending.

narrator irritated me.

The story I loved but the narrator repeatedly sounding as if he was asking a question really got under my skin.

Decent but not spectacularly original

Character development was mediocre and jumped from introduction to facilitating climax crisis. Setting heavily based on Christian type medieval religious structures. Overall storyline was weak and centered around the climax event.

Narration detracts from the story

The intonation of the narrator is the same when describing the grass as it is describing the events of a battle. So much extra concentration is required to ignore this false impression. I will avoid this narrator in future.

Good story but short & a bit annoying

I like the story even though it was quite short. The narrator had a lovely voice but his inflection was all wrong and made listening quite difficult. I think I’ll read more from this author, rather than listening on Audible.

Good opening book

enjoyed the story, good characters and a good start to a potentially interesting series. only fault for me is Alex Wyndham. It was great listening to him in Mageborn onwards, but find him unnecessarily intense in mundane moments.

Lost a little in translation

An enjoyable adventure- vanquishing the darkness.
The performance has an unusual cadence which I felt detracted from the story at times, lost some of the humour, but the character voices were good.

seemed really good for the first few chapters but it's boring, theres no end game so far also the story is split between too many characters so it's just annoying

Enjoyed every minute.

Having listened to Michael G Manning’s Embers of Illeniel saga, I was looking forward to listening to this standalone title. Especially with the narrator being Alex Wyndham again.

With the story of a young boy growing up to find magic, love and a quest only Thomas’s destiny could fall into. Without spoiling the story, this was an enjoyable listen and if you love Michael G Manning, it is a must.

I can’t wait to listen to many more sagas by this author.

This is a short story that is easy on the hear and captivating. I would definitely recommend this books to others.

Nice little story, challenging reader

I enjoyed this little story - it was well-written, the characters were likeable (if not as complex as I might have liked) and it was an interesting take on old pagan religious sects. However, the reader's style was very one-dimensional. He used the same few voice inflections over & over, so a tense battle scene sounded the same as an awkward encounter between two lovers. I stuck with it because of the story, but think that a reader who offered more variety of tone and familiarity with storytelling would have been much more enjoyable to listen to.

Narrator was a distraction

Narrator was a distraction with his breathy, somewhat incredulous delivery and an irritating habit of ending sentences on a higher note.

Narration made it impossible to finish

I was excited about the story and how good the narrator's different character voices sounded in the sample. Was very disappointed. The narrator's intonation and emphases are so incredibly annoying so I couldn't take in any of the story.

I usually enjoy M G Manning, but this was dreadful

Several things - the narration. 'The voices' were ok, but every other line - and I mean every single phrase - was read with a really weird intonation. it was either OMG!-OMG!-OMG!! or DOOM-DOOM-DOOMMMM, with no 'natural' story-telling voice at all, and was entirely offputting. Second - I really don't think a whole fantasy sequence can be done well in a short story - too much is missing to really draw you in, even IF you could get past the narration. Thirdly, I might have forgiven some of the above if I could have convinced myself it was meant for quite a young audience, but the sexual references and occasional 'language' (which I am usually quite OK with) denied me that excuse. Thirdly, fanatical religion is not my thing, but that one's on me. But hey - it was free, so I don't have to ask for my money back. Just my time 😒

Average

Michael G Manning is one of my favourite authors but compared to his other works this is below average.
I found myself bored with the story, the main character is rather stupid when it comes to girls, his lack of action in that regard becomes rather annoying.
The Narrators lack of voice diversity takes away from the story. All the female characters have the same dark alley hussie voice. I would recommend reading this one not listening to it.

not the best example of the author's work

Sounds and moves like a D&D module

For some reason the narrator makes every character sound like they have a sore throat.

Book felt like a summary

This book felt like a summary it started well and got in-depth with good characters but then jump forward several moments in time and felt like large portions of the book were missing
