Snap. Upload. Ruin a reputation.

In this pause-resisting short story from international bestselling author Jeffery Deaver, senior detective Jon Avery inherits a deeply troubling case. At an off-campus party, university professor Rose Taylor is drugged, undressed, and photographed on a burner phone. In seconds her humiliation is uploaded, and millions of JPEGs are zipping like immortal wasps through the internet. But why would someone target her? She has no vengeful exes or rival academics, no stalkers or unhinged students. Jon Avery, the sharpest, most experienced investigator in the sheriff’s office, is determined to find out who’s behind this horrific invasion of privacy. But soon he runs into a wall of silence at Preston College - an academic mecca whose reputation one doesn’t dare tarnish. The message is clear: if he pursues the case, he’ll pay for it.

Another brilliant short!

A female college professor is drugged then nude photos are posted on the internet. Police begin to suspect members of the football team but have no proof. Then and things start happening to the team members…is it karma or someone out for revenge? You’ll be guessing to the end.

Good story

Liked it. Not a lot of blood or gore or weird crime details. Sharply crafted. Pulled together nicely at the end. We’ll narrated.

Digitally yours

*not many spoilers* 3.5 stars. Avery, a 42 year old veteran police detective takes over a case temporarily for a colleague as a favor and stumbles into a cyber crime. An affluent young woman (a professor) from a prestigious college is drugged, molested, and left on a bench no worse for wear, but not before the perpetrator takes pictures of her disheveled form and releases the pics on Snapchat. And once the picture is out, it's out. Of course Avery wants to bring the young woman justice, but like the real world, cyber crimes are much harder to pursue due to the sophistication of the hacker and the anonymity of the web. But he does find out what truly happens and it ends somewhat sweetly. This short story by Deaver was very realistic and while I do read to escape real life, sometimes a small reminder of how something so innocuous as the decision of going to a party can have the dire consequences for the rest of your life is really sombering. And of course, stick to one drink/one glass that only you handle yourself. Otherwise, decent read.

A very short story

Deaver is usually a mastermind at thrilling edge of your seat story...this was not one of those.
