Publisher's summary

Germany, 1939. A tumbledown farmhouse, on the outskirts of a close-knit village in the heart of the rolling hills of Bavaria. A once happy family home torn apart by Nazi rule. And one young girl who refuses to give up on what she believes in....

London, 2018: When 94-year-old Imogen receives a letter addressed to her in neat, unfamiliar handwriting, she notices the postmark is stamped from Germany - and it sends shivers down her spine....

Germany, 1939: Thirteen-year-old Magda is devastated by the loss of her best friend, shy and gentle Lotte, cruelly snatched from her and sent to a concentration camp – the Star of David sewn on her faded, brown coat. As the Nazi’s power takes hold, Magda realises she’s not like the other girls in her German village - she hates the fanatical new rules of the Hitler Youth. So Magda secretly joins The White Rose Movement and begins to rebel against the oppressive, frightening world around her.

But when an English bomber pilot crashes in a field near Magda’s home she is faced with an impossible choice: to risk the safety of her family or to save a stranger and make a difference in the devastating war that has claimed the lives of so many. Little does she know, her actions will have the power to change the life of another girl, on the other side of enemy lines, forever....

Inspired by a true story, this is a heart-wrenching, gripping and absolutely unforgettable tale of the strength of human kindness in a time of unimaginable heartbreak. Fans of Orphan Train, The Tattooist of Auschwitz and The Book Thief will be utterly gripped by this beautiful, sweeping, World War Two novel.

Great story, Superb narratorI

This was an excellent World War 2 story, very closely grounded in historical fact, with wonderful, nuanced characters, and a big reveal that actually was a reveal. The narrator was the best I've ever heard - this was a real tour de force, requiring British, Scottish, German, and American accents, as well as a range of ages and genders - all flawlessly executed, with each voice clearly recognizable. Highly recommended!

Fascinating

As a lifelong student of history and a veteran of the United States Air Force I have heard many tales and studied extensively the many wars that our country has been involved in. The story gives a very humanistic & realistic representation of the realities of every day people. Very well researched and done. Many thanks to the author for sharing the lives and times of her family. Bravo!

Loved it!

Wonderful book if you have any interest in the war. Great story with much based on real events. Good characters. Great to listen to while driving. Kept me interested the entire time. Also really enjoyed the narration. Joy could have had a more “joyful” voice, but the narrator was great. I would listen to more of her readings.

Great historical novel

I appreciatedbthe describe of the lives of two girls who grew up during WW2. the book is well written and the narration is excellent. The author handles intimacy of the characters without sensationalism or crude details. she also describes the ugly acts of qae in the same manner. if you like historical fiction you will enjoy this book.

So glad for saved written letters!

Interesting story written from some real life experiences. Well written and just enough of the horrors to be true and still bearable. Characters come to life.

Excellent history

The secret letter is a true story of WWII. The performance is excellent of each character of the story, the narrator is excellent and the story was written very well . I was able to draw right into the characters what each one was like. It has always sadden me on what the Nazi party and their soldier's did horrifying things. There were other Germans who didn't believe in this and what the Nazi regime doing. I even found out that a popular store was founded in the 1950's because of the war and what the other's had gone through. I won't tell you the name don't want to spoil it for you. You will be surprised I'm sure.
I would definitely recommend this audio to others.
