A Must read!

A tragic yet uplifting wonderful story of a women’s life of a life born in slavery and surviving and thriving as freedom arrives in many forms. History and the stories of each person is important as this well written book demonstrates.

Everyone should read/listen to this book. The narrator was so good. Every character was either easy to love or easy . .. not to love. So glad I listened.

Heartbreaking and Beautiful story of friendship

Such a heartbreaking and beautiful story of friendship in unexpected places and overcoming prejudice and ignorance. The split timeline was easy to follow because Frankie was telling her own story from years before. The narration was well done. I am lightly comparing this to The Extraordinary Deaths of Mrs. Kip in that they both show us how we can learn a lot from an elderly Christian woman. Their love and wisdom is priceless.

Tear jerker

I have not cried this much in a long time. This was such a well told story. I found my self falling into the story and loving each character.

Didn't want this one to end...

This one touched ALL the feelings. Roosevelt 's WPA programs brought work to many down and out people during the depression, and the one interviewing former slaves was one of the most interesting and most controversial. One woman's experiences during this time will keep you enthralled from beginning to end.

A beautiful story of history, hope and healing.

Wonderfully written and performed. An important reminder that everyone has a story to share and while we can’t undo the past we can learn from it and vow to live better and love better. Attempts to edit the past should not be accepted but our future decisions and choices should be forever changed based on what we know and learn from history. Read it you wont regret it.
