A beautiful tale of hope, courage, and sisterhood—inspired by the real House of Mercy and the girls confined there for daring to break the rules.

Growing up in New York City in the 1910s, Luella and Effie Tildon realize that even as wealthy young women, their freedoms come with limits. But when the sisters discover a shocking secret about their father, Luella, the brazen elder sister, becomes emboldened to do as she pleases. Her rebellion comes with consequences, and one morning Luella is mysteriously gone.

Effie suspects her father has sent Luella to the House of Mercy and hatches a plan to get herself committed to save her sister. But she made a miscalculation, and with no one to believe her story, Effie’s own escape seems impossible—unless she can trust an enigmatic girl named Mable. As their fates entwine, Mable and Effie must rely on their tenuous friendship to survive.

Home for Unwanted Girls meets The Dollhouse in this atmospheric, heartwarming story that explores not only the historical House of Mercy, but the lives—and secrets—of the girls who stayed there.

I almost turned this one back in after struggling through the prologue with a fairly shrill and overly dramatic narrator. Fortunately she settled down to a tolerable level for other chapters. Unfortunately I think they miscast the reader who portrays the mother’s voice. The mother is French and the actresses use a French accent for her dialogue, but a very slow-paced American voice for her narration. I did like the portrayal of Mabel’s voice.

Not too keen on the readers, but gripping story

I am particular with what I spend my time listening to. Plus, the market is saturated with many books which are simply not memorable. This isn't the case with, "The Girls With No Names." It is not only based on interesting history but the characters are diverse in personality and it connects them despite their contrasting personalities. It will keep you engrossed and wanting more!

One of the most truly wonderful aspects of this audio is how Burdick pulls the listener in with her deeply emotional details of what woman feel and what they endured especially during the early 1900's. Those who listen to this audio will indeed feel a connection with at least one of it's characters and you will be thankful you did not endure the suffrage of these woman. If you enjoy deeply descriptive and emotional audios/books, this will will indeed fit your need. Burdick will pull you in every direction --- tears, smiles, and that rich feeling of being a woman and feeling the depths of motherhood, hope, disappointment, and lifes changes.

The narration is perfect. I thoroughly enjoyed how it was fitting for each character and the pronounciation of the words were excellent. Plus, the intonation of the voices were not over the top or under the surface --- it fit the specific dialogue and descriptives perfectly. Purchase this audio! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! it's excellent!

Great story

This is a complex story but the writer serves us the characters in a little buffet allowing each individual to be thoroughly developed. The hardships the girls endured and their resiliency is extraordinary and so foreign to our modern comfortable lives. The writer has recreated the era with clever description and dialogue and the use of individual narrators for each character makes for a more entertaining listen

I was surprised how much I liked this book
