In the rigid theocracy of Salem, Massachusetts, rumors that women are practicing witchcraft galvanize the town. In a searing portrait of a community engulfed by panic—with ruthless prosecutors, and neighbors eager to testify against neighbor—The Crucible famously mirrors the anti-Communist hysteria that held the United States in its grip in the 1950’s.

Fiercely romantic and hugely influential, The Scarlet Letter is the tale of Hester Prynne, imprisoned, publicly shamed, and forced to wear a scarlet for committing adultery and bearing an illegitimate child, Pearl. In their small Puritan village, Hester and her daughter struggle to survive. In this searing study of the tension between private and public existence, Hester Prynne’s inner strength and quiet dignity secure her place as one of the first great heroines of American fiction.

This final play from the pen of Oscar Wilde is a stylish send-up of Victorian courtship and manners, complete with assumed names, mistaken lovers, and a lost handbag. Jack and Algernon are best friends, both wooing ladies who think their names are Ernest, "that name which inspires absolute confidence". Wilde's effervescent wit, scathing social satire, and high farce make this one of the most cherished plays in the English language.

Story
A poignant look at the disillusionment and angst of the post-World War I generation, The Sun Also Rises introduces two of Hemingway’s most unforgettable characters: Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley. The story follows the flamboyant Brett and the hapless Jake as they journey from the wild nightlife of 1920s Paris to the brutal bullfighting rings of Spain with a motley group of expatriates. In his first great literary masterpiece, Hemingway portrays an age of moral bankruptcy, spiritual dissolution, unrealized love, and vanishing illusions.

Jane Austen's classic romantic comedy is the sparkling tale of the Bennets, a family blessed with five daughters and a mother desperate to marry them off. The tempestuous pairing of the witty, independent Elizabeth and her arrogant but honorable suitor Mr. Darcy sets the standard for all great couples of stage and screen. Although many have tried, few literary romances have matched the wit and gentile satire of Austen's Pride and Prejudice.

Publisher's summary
Nathaniel Hawthorne's classic masterpiece The Scarlet Letter is set in 17th century Salem, Massachusetts, and concerns the public condemnation of Hester Prynne, who bears an illegitimate child. However, the story is not about adultery, nor is it specifically about sin. Rather, it traces the effect of actual and symbolic sin on the mind and spirit of each character. In the end, The Scarlet Letter comes to stand not for adultery, but for the guilt that is the common experience of all humans. An original audio adaptation of the classic American novel.

The doorbell rings, just days after my beloved husband’s sudden death. I don’t recognise the woman on our doorstep, with her blonde highlights, a diamond bracelet identical to my own and a bouncing baby boy in her arms. As I show her inside, I notice her eyes grow wide as she takes in our spacious hallway, and the big squashy sofas that we all used to pile on. She glances at the silver-framed family photos and my little daughter hiding behind my skirts. She looks at me, her blue eyes serious. ‘I’m sorry’ she says. ‘I am your husband’s girlfriend. And this is his son.'

Story
One of the most important novels in classic literature, Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter tackles the subject of adultery, with the notorious Hester Prynne at the forefront of the scandal in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. In the beginning of the novel, Hester is serving time in prison for having a child out of wedlock and is forced to wear a scarlet A on her clothing at all times, so she cannot run from her sin no matter where she goes.

A recording of community theater
I think that this may be a recording of a community theater performance. The quality of the audio production is not what I expected. At one point it sounds like an audience member’s watch alarm goes off for about 15 seconds (like one of those watches I had growing up as a kid in the 70s).

Interesting if confusing for first time listeners
Liked it. It’s a very interesting interpretation of the Scarlet Letter, though familiarity w the book would help.

Why are there only 2 chapters?
The description did not say this had only two chapters. I was enjoying this version, but let down when I realized the story was incomplete.

Great Version for People With Attention Deficit
If you could sum up The Scarlet Letter (Dramatized) in three words, what would they be?
Vivid
Straight to the point
Keeps one's attention
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Scarlet Letter (Dramatized)?
When after seven hard, lonely years had passed Hester was still in love with Dimmesdale and was willing to sail away with him and make a new life.
Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favorite?
Hester Prynne was by far for me the most liked character. She rose from this sin and became stronger and wiser. She in the story became almost a noble woman and a caregiver to all. After time her noble actions and notable character traits became legendary. Yet her positive society status all stemmed from a sin. Not to say that sin is approved of, however in this particular story God turned the sin into something positive and good.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Having gone through different situations in my life I almost related to Hester.
I also at times felt pity for Dimmesdale. The story defiantly struck a chord with me.
