On just another average day, Jake finds himself in a forest filled with monsters, dangers, and opportunity....

It was a day like any other when suddenly the world changed. The universe reached a threshold humanity didn’t even know existed, and it was time to finally be integrated into the vast multiverse. A place where power is the only thing anyone can truly rely on.

Jake, a seemingly average office worker, finds himself thrust into this new world. Into a tutorial filled with dangers and opportunities.

His new reality should breed fear and concern. His fellow coworkers falter at every turn. Jake, however, finds himself thriving.

Perhaps... This is the world Jake was meant to be born in.

LitRPG means Literary Role Playing Game. Simply put, it’s the book version of watching someone play a video game, usually one that’s set up like an MMO (massively multiplayer online) RPG. It’s a blend of sci-fi and fantasy, depending on how it comes to be that our main character ends up living inside a virtual reality. the point of LitRPG is not how we get there, but that we get to be in this virtual reality period, living life as a badass video-game character. Beat the grind and submerse yourself in these addictive LitRPGs.

Engaging Progression System • Compelling Protagonist • Exceptional Voice Acting • Compelling Character Development

okay so I put this series off because I read a couple reviews saying it was hard to finish and murder hobo blah blah. I listen to a lot of litrpg progression, this book felt like but defiance of the fall, has a lot of the same beats to it and tropes but it is different, better in some/not better in others yadda yadda definition of different. I at no time felt that it was hard to get through, really enjoyed listening, and even finding thinking I couldn't waiting until I could continue. I felt that I had to actually take time to write a review because of the other reviews that put me off listening for so long. Now it is time for me to immediately start the next book.

Don't listen to the other reviews

I have been reading this series on for a long time now and I am excited to see it in e-book and audible format, especially with my favorite narrator!

The author does an excellent job of telling an interesting story with great development of both plot and individual characters.

The LITRPG mechanics are explained well and the book is accessible, even for people who have not previously read this genre. 100% recommend this book for fans of the genre and newbies as well.

The best compliment I can give is that the story is interesting and I keep wanting to know what happens next. I think that's the hallmark of a great book.

A fun and interesting read!

I enjoyed the first and second books but the story takes a back seat to a lot of the litrpg details. The first book could probably have been told in full in only 1/4 the amount of chapters and the second book followed that trend.
One particular theme which aggravated me throughout the books more than anything else is that the author seemed determined to make the MC as overpowered as possible but seemed too ashamed to just blatantly hand out overpowered abilities so instead you get pages and pages of the MC reading over completely stupid skills like 'simple thrust' and reasoning out as to why that skill is just not a good pick until finally they get to the rare skill and are like 'Wow this is good. I should get this.' only to see the UBER LEGENDARY skill and be like "oh well that rarity might mean its good... but I shouldn't blindly pick it because the system is telling me its opaf but let me reason it out for about a hundred pages and then pick that one every single time anyway".

Overall I did enjoy the books, although I did have to put in a little effort to stick with it. I probably will not continue beyond book two though.

Decent litrpg, bit light on plot

I was recommended this book by a friend of mine and wasn't top sure what to expect. I found myself becoming so attached to the characters and what was going on, I would turn off my TV and instead of playing a video game I owned, I would rather find out what happened next in this book. loved every bit of this story and I have every intention to buy the next one and the one after when it comes out.

absolutely loved the story and performance

I read the other reviews and read that the MC was a murder hobo multiple times. after reading the book myself, I think that those comments greatly exaggerate. the MC really likes challenges and winning, that's all. although he prefers a challenge in which he can fight as they're more exciting, he actively avoids humans and kills them only in self defence. Focusing on beasts instead. all in all i think the book was great and that you should definitely read it! Also if you read He Who fights with monsters, in my opinion, the MC had the attitude similar to Thara about killing.

I want you to know, the MC isn't a murder hobo.

First: Travis is a pleasure to listen to as always.

As for the story, we have yet another system apocalypse with Earth being integrated into The System. The main character Jake gets some special character stuff, but you soon learn he's not the only one, other people do get specialized details, but they're the minority. MC is a loner and spends the majority of the book by himself, although the view does sometimes switch to other main characters in the story. The story is about his time in the "Tutorial area" of the new system.

Some things I liked:
- Leveling crafting doesn't hinder character level, so they can stay combat relevant even when focusing on crafting.
- Details on unchosen skills & classes is fun.
- Decently written combat scenes with skill usage.
- Multiple character views.
- Gods interacting with characters.
- Some creative classes/professions.
- Writing doesn't pull punches with detail.

Some things I didn't like:
- People QUICKLY devolve into killing each other.
- Villian leader was part of a PMC because of course he was.
- Very long char profiles already (thankfully they aren't shown much)
- Location is limited to a small area of the Tutorial with very limited people.
- Very quick leveling progression, especially compared to lack of elapsed time in the story.

I would read the sequel, but I have a few worries. This format feel like it's just the start to yet another very long open ended story with probably no planned ending. Due to the MCs loner tendencies, I see next to no involvement in base/city building and will mostly be forward character momentum. We'll have to see what the next book holds, but it feels like this series could have some very slow progression when it comes to anything but leveling.

Some good, some not so great.

This book was great from start to finish. The voice performance was amazing highly recommended. I will be listening to the other box.

Fantastic book

Having working in an office for many years I found the opening scenes quite believable - ignoring the integration of the universe part, of course. I had coworkers who could have been the model for each of the characters !

The narrator’s pace and tone were very good for men, a little bit less so for female characters but not distracting to the immersion.

I am looking forward to the next few books in the series, there are some things that reminded me instantly of The Land but enough differences to make this a worthwhile listening experience !

Thank you and keep writing please !!!

Fantastically Realistic … Kinda

same issue with all LitRP books... stat block reading. I get when he gets a new power, but I don't really need an entire rundown 15 times.

I really do like how the pro and antagonist start to flip a bit towards the end.

about average with a twist

A great LitRPG with unusual characters and a lot of moving parts. Sets up for an excellent world.
