Publisher's summary

Firefighter and mercenary Marat Azarov thinks he’s being noble when he rescues a beautiful slave woman from certain torture.

Alas, she turns out to be more than she appears and does not appreciate his interference. In an attempt to redeem himself - and perhaps win her regard - he concocts a plot that even his grenade-flinging colleague Striker deems unwise. Soon, he’s blowing up androids, being shot at by pirates, and earning the wrath of his own boss, and he’s not even sure if the woman likes him. Some days, it doesn’t pay to be a mercenary.

love it

I love the story line heroine and the humanity given to our heroes in Ruby's books the narration is perfect for me and the blend of adventure and romance tends to be well balanced. i have to say I enjoy heroines that start and stay savvy, too many adventure romances start the heroines as intelligent and brave degrading them throught the story becoming less comptetent as the story goes. The mandrake company doesn't do this at any time the strenghts of the heroine complimenting and at times drawing out the strengths of the hero and vice versa. good stuff.

Excellent

Great Read! So fun to see how Asimov’s story worked out! Glad you added this book to the series! Thanks

Love Chivalry!

I enjoyed the characters of this particular book in the series. The fact that chivalry was not dead, is a boon! I also enjoyed the camaraderie between the team as a whole. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series and wish it would continue as there are other avenues it could take. I just wish the whole series was on audible as an audiobook. But, I’ve read the ones that are available only as books and listen to the ones available as audiobooks and still thoroughly enjoy the series.

Short but Sweet

This novella is my least favorite entry in the series, but it's still better than average and it does explain the Pirate Captain's Daughter. Redfield's narration is outstanding. She could make a telephone book come alive!!!

If you can suspend disbelief and channel Arya

The central premise of an elaborate revenge plot is unbelievable, but once I embraced the eye-roll, I enjoyed the exaggerated Buck Rogers-style storyline of slave girls and and a beyond lecherous pirate captain. This is a cheesier version of Arya from GoT. Still, this could be triggering if you can’t handle r@pe themes.

Thanks to Stryker playing a larger role, the humor is more plentiful. He’s definitely the frat-boy style comic relief as the lovable but crude oaf. More of a novella than a book, this one benefits from the shorter length, giving much better action to romance ratios than the previous books; more action, less romance made for better space opera. There’s really only one quickie at the very end.

believable story line exclent writing

I enjoyed the story from start to finish!
I have gotten spoiled having both female and male narrator's. I would suggest dual narrators This Narrator did a very good job but it would have been enhanced with dual narrators.
I would recommend this book to any one and I will be looking for more from this author..

Fits right in

I’ve been really enjoying the series. I don’t know if any additional books will be added but I can always hope. But that would mean that additional characters would have to be added. I made the mistake of listening to this novella after book 6 when it really should be listened to between five and six. It answers a question I had. As far as this series is concerned, I like the people, I like the adventure, and I like the romance.

Ying and Maret

Ying is bada$$! She's strong and super intelligent! Maret is hot and chivalrous. Will he convince her he's not just trying to get in her pants?

DNF (could not finish)

well I performed a Princess Bride and skipped to the end.

Should've listened to other reviewers who said this wasn't up to this author's usual standards (not that I've read her outside this series).

There's only so many eye-roll moments in one chapter that I'm prepared to tolerate.

I always say that even great authors have their duds; this was certainly 1 for this author. You could FEEL her struggling to hold the plot together with all those inconsistent characters. It was cringely awkward. I wanted to read this 1, wanted to like it, but had to give up
