Publisher's Summary

An unspeakable crime. A confounding investigation. At a time when the King brand has never been stronger, he has delivered one of his most unsettling and compulsively listenable stories.

An 11-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

As the investigation expands and horrifying answers begin to emerge, King's propulsive story kicks into high gear, generating strong tension and almost unbearable suspense. Terry Maitland seems like a nice guy, but is he wearing another face? When the answer comes, it will shock you as only Stephen King can.

Critic Reviews

"Narrator Will Patton turns this story into an audio blockbuster.... King's usual sprawling cast of characters is also present, and suffice it to say that Patton does them all justice." (AudioFile)

Started off interesting but...

The story started off interesting but was slow and a bit boring by the middle through the end. I usually really enjoy SK but not so much this time.

I didn't like the narrator, he was too breathy. Listen to the sample before you buy.

The story was hard to follow

Im a Stephen King fan, but this story was hard for me to keep up with. The reader is pretty much using a raspy voice, its hard to stay awake or engaged.
This may be one of the books you're better off reading on your own.

Will Patton great - story so so

Will Patton did a wonderful job of reading this novel. He adds so much to this book. I will watch for him again.

I read or listen to everything I can when it comes to Stephen King and he has been my go to author for almost 30 years. In the past few years he has become political in his books and it has been a huge turnoff. But in this book he toned down is political rhetoric and it's not distracting to this story.

The outsider is a typical SK story and is well thought out and suspenseful. It has all the ingredients of Kings best novels, a really bad guy ( the outsider ) and the good guys hunting the bad guy. In this case he throws in Holly Gibney from the Mr. Mercedes trilogy. In that story she played an essential part in the mix of characters. After Holley is introduction into this book it seems to take a turn and never gets back into a believable storyline . I didn't like her in this role but many readers seemed to enjoy her introduction.

hard to listen

The story itself was mediocre, at best. I was expecting more. But it was quite possibly the most annoying narration I've ever experienced on Audible.

Any minute now it will get better... NO IT DOESNT!

I listened to this piece of garbage from start to finish. Thinking the entire time "at any second its going to get great." i didnt. spare yourself. Stephen King is spent.

Feels more like an episode of X-Files

This book could well be about a random X-Files episode... that’s how complex the story is...

The books spends most of the time on developing on a character that is killed and becomes basically irrelevant for the whole story. Then “The Outsider” hardly is developed and is a minor part of the story. Actually I think King spends more time describing a female Luchadora movie than he spends talking about the monster/ entity...
If you like a book that is 80% about people being confused and 20% relevant things happening: this is for you.

By now King’s basically writing books just to say he keeps on writing...
Some people complain about the characters sounding older than they actually are and that is kinda noticeable but didn’t annoy me when compared to the whole pointless story...

Don’t know how the book was written, but the way the narrator portrayed Holly Gibney (I mean the way he makes pauses with each word while making a female voice sounds like a sad version of a robot) is probably the most annoying and off-putting portrayal I have had the displeasure of listening on Audible... makes the character even more annoying than she already is!

Just can’t finish it

I don’t like to give up on a book, but I kept checking to see how much longer until this one was over. I finally bailed. Best part was the reader.

Didn’t finish it

This book started off as a very promising story, but then drifted off into something else. I gave up 3/4 of the way through.

Meh

The story was just ok. This book was terribly predictable. The narration was the only reason I finished the book and didn’t return it. Will Patton did an excellent job! Thanks Will for salvaging this for me.
