From New York Times best-selling author Michael Connelly, a new thriller introducing a driven young detective trying to prove herself in the LAPD.

Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none, as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor.

But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting. Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn. Against orders and her own partner's wishes, she works both cases by day while maintaining her shift by night. As the cases entwine, they pull her closer to her own demons and the reason she won't give up her job, no matter what the department throws at her.

Reseñas editoriales

Editors Select, July 2017

A new series from Michael Connelly? Sign me up! Renee Ballard works "The Late Show" (i.e., the night shift) and finds it hard to give up "vampire cases" (the ones that need to be worked at night); she knows the investigations will languish for lack of care from the daytime detectives. Connelly fans will delight in the familiar pleasures of his Ballard’s beat: authentic police procedural detail, "ripped from the headlines" intertwined plot lines, and a detective driven as much by personal demons as a hunger for justice. What’s new is a female protagonist, voiced by TV actress Katherine Moennig (pronounced "Mennig" - you may remember her as Jake from The Young Americans.) Fittingly, The Late Show is Moennig’s audiobook debut - listeners are at the start of a series that promises to satisfy for years to come. —Christina, Audible Editor

Katherine Moennig is a terrific actress. She does a great turn on Ray Donovan. Maybe my favorite character on that show. But this narration isn't good. It's disappointing. She just reads it and reads it fast. I wish she had listened to a few audiobooks ahead of time to see how its done. Such a good voice, such a good actress, this should be better.

As far as the story goes, it's hard to tell. Couldn't get past the narration.

Oh, the narration!

I've read many other Michael Connelly books, and approached this with high expectations. I was not disappointed.

As an avid audiobook reader-listener (2-3 books/week), I've come across many narrators and have developed my own favorites. I was cautious when I read the other reviews that made negative remarks on the narration, but I had no problem with Katherine Moennig's narrative style. I found her pace and inflection only improved the story's suspense.

The birth of a new repeatable main character? Yes, quite possibly. The night shift is a rich setting, and the character development was intriguing enough that I sure HOPE we'll see a continuation of this line.

Highly recommended!

Another Connelly Win!

For a lot of reasons. Excellent story. Great characters development. And I love his protagonist, Rene Ballard, a strong, gutsy female detective in the LAPD.

After seeing more than one Connelly title on a shelf or coffee table at my mother in law's home, I decided to give The Late Show a shot. Glad I did, as I've been in search of a new prolific writer to delve into.

Michael Connelly just earned a new fan...

Would you listen to The Late Show again? Why?

Yes, Michael Connelly has introduced a new main character, Renée Ballard that has depth, intelligence, and great sense of justice. He does a fabulous job of weaving in her backstory so we get to know Renée and get a feel for what make her tick. Additionally, Katherine Moennig does such a fabulous job of narration. I've been a fan of Katherine Moennig's work in film and TV for a long time; she always gives a convincing and powerful performance. Clearly, Audible has found a narrating star to add to their notable list of great narrators.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Late Show?

Their are many memorable moments in The Late Show so it would hard to rank them.

Which scene was your favorite?

Again, as with many great writers, everything is so perfectly woven together that all scenes affect the others- the great scenes are not stand-alone moments.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, I wanted more. My wife and I listened to this book together on our daily walks. We had some longer than usual walks because we had trouble interrupting the story. We both developed an endearing respect and love for Renée Ballard.

Any additional comments?

I hope Michael Connelly continues the Renée Ballard character and develops a long running series as he has done with Harry Bosch. Please keep Katherine Moennig as the voice of Renée. Oh - Audible if you reading this, believe me Katherine Moennig is new narrating star.

Connelly has done it again -Moenning is fabulous

After reading his Bosch and Haller adventures it was good to read a strong female police story. I hope there are more.

Connolly does it again

although the parallels are almost too similar.

I cannot slight MC by too much since his character development is pretty damn awesome. I want to know more about Ballard having read this book.

can't wait for #2.

Just like the early days of Harry

This mostly gripping story was totally ruined by the monotonous narration.

I'm blind and the narration can make or break an audiobook for me.
I could have bought the Kindle version and used the synthesized text-to-speech feature which sounds just as wooden as this performance,.

Before I was blind, I read and enjoyed many Connelly books. I thought a new series might be interesting. I think Renée Ballard, narrated by someone who didn't sound as if they took too much Ambuen, , would have come across as a feisty and interesting detective

Horrible narration, good story

this book was one of a long line of Mr. Connelly's works that was fabulous. Love my new hero-Renee Ballard. Cannot wait for the next installment of her career. Hurry up!!!

If you could sum up The Late Show in three words, what would they be?

(Police) Procedure - Mystery - Corruption

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

"Surprise" ending - "forces" against Ballard were crafty.

What about Katherine Moennig’s performance did you like?

"Even" toned - didn't "get ahead of herself" in the narration - not sounding overly emotional.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Today's cases from the L.A.P.D.

Any additional comments?

None significant.

Police procedural - mystery - female dectective

Love Michael Connelly and have listened to all of his Harry Bosch books and his other detective novels and and very pleased he has added a new character. This book does not disappoint. I'm surprised to read all of the negative comments on the narrator. I felt she did a good job capturing the main character.
