Publisher's Summary

In this standalone prequel to his number-one best seller Rogue Lawyer, John Grisham tells the story of how Sebastian Rudd finally found someone he could trust to be his driver, bodyguard, law clerk, and partner.

Sebastian Rudd, rogue lawyer, defends people other lawyers won't go near. It's controversial and dangerous work, which is why Sebastian needs his bodyguard/assistant/sidekick, Partner. So if Sebastian is just about the most unpopular lawyer in town, why is Partner so loyal to him? How did they meet? And what's the real story of this man of few words who's as good with a gun as he is with the law? The surprising answers are all in Partners.

Excellent Story

This was the first part of a story that continues with the full book called Rogue Lawyer. It is an excellent introduction to the full story which I also read. You should read this first before going on to the full book. Unfortunately, I did it in reverse. I recommend this to anyone who likes legal thrillers. John Grisham is at his best in this story.

I wrote a 2 star review to Rogue Lawyer...

...so it should not be surprising that I did particularly not like its prequel either. That's correct, John Grisham released a prequel novella to Rogue Lawyer 5 months after releasing the novel. I was a fan of Grisham from his earliest days and I have hard cover copies of most of his books released from 1989 through 2005. For 20 years Grisham set the standard for legal thrillers. His last several novels indicate he has either lost interest or lost his touch. There are now several legal thriller writers who are consistently better than Grisham including Robert Dugoni, Scott Pratt, Sheldon Siegel, Teresa Burrell, Joel Goldman, Anthony Franze, Michael Connelly, Greg Iles, Steve Martini, Marty Green, and H Terrell Griffin. I'll stop at 11, but there are more.

Partners is not a bad novella. Neither is it an excellent one.

Here you go again.

Any additional comments?

Once again, Grisham proves that he is not only one of the best writers on the planet, but one of the most prolific. Frankly, you don't need my or any other reviewer's comments. If the title says Grisham, you buy it. Period.

Good story

The story was good, the narration could use some perking up, but overall above average.

not so sure its his work

Not typical for John Grissom, few details. I was very disappointed at how short it is.

Good, short story

Great legal tale by John Grisham for a quick trip in the car. Interesting ending.

Great plot!

Loved it tremendously. Typical John Gresham. Intriguing plot as well as cast of characters. Can't wait to read the sequel.

Great teaser

My only complaint is that I wish the story was longer. I loved the first one and this short was just as good. Mark Deakins was flawless and as smooth as before. He has been my favorite book narrator thus far.

Worth it

Good narration, good short story, keeps your attention. No regrets, listened during a short flight.
