Publisher's summary

Ahren and his companions journey on to Evergreen, finding new courage after the traumas of the Green Sea. Setting off, then, to traverse the continent in search of the missing Paladin Yollock, it isn't long before they find themselves sucked into a maelstrom of adventures involving a woman who has been robbed, a desperate Cape Verstaad grandee, not to mention a cutthroat city which proves itself a veritable nest of ne'er-do-wells. Controlled by the brilliant assassin Reik Silvermantle, this hub of lawlessness and immorality presents Ahren and his friends with one of their greatest challenges . . .

How much difference and narrator makes a story

No disrespect to anyone who helped make this audiobook, but this audiobook is not up to the standard you guys have set. The narrator was not on the same level as the last narrator. He didn’t bring the book to life as it’s normally is, when I listened to it. The book by itself is awesome. It was like makers tried to remake a really good recipe but re-created it with crappy ingredients. I hope for the rest of the series, the makers return to Gilbert Jackson, as narrator. Other than the narration, everything else was awesome as usual.

Great Story! Even with a different narrator.

I missed Gildart Jackson's narration of the story. Stewart Crank did a good job but by book 11 every character was owned by Gildart except for those who were introduced in this book.

The series has taken a more dark and dreary tone since the more bubble gum like beginning. It makes sense since we are coming towards the end of the series. This book felt similar to book 9.

I have enjoyed the character development of the new characters. This is a great series and well worth the listen.

Still a great story

I was wary based on all the bad reviews due to the change in narrator, and of course I love the original narrator, but this one wasn't as bad as I was expecting! After I got used to the difference in character voice, which didn't really take too long, then I really enjoyed the story. I could still tell when different characters spoke, and by the end I was enjoying the narrator as well as the story. Great series!! I'll buy the next book regardless of which narrator performs it.

mid at best

I have thoroughly enjoyed this series since the first book. I didn't like this book because of the narrator change. if this was the only narrator that would have been fine but getting used to one voice for 10 books and then switching ...wasn't great.

Don't Kill the Messenger . . .

or in this case, the new narrator! Let's be honest, all listeners are not happy with Torsten Weitze's decision to switch narrators this far into the series. Why it was done, we may never know, but let's hope the next story gets us back to the original narrator, Gildart Jackson. With that being addressed, Stewart Crank did a fine job picking up the storyline and trying to interpret the characters. Putting aside our anger at the switch of narrators, let's recognize that he has a pleasant voice, and his voice changes for each character is well done. The story had some unforeseen twists that made the ending unexpected. This has been a strength of Weitze's series. A 4 star rating for "Overall" and "Performance" just because the decision was made to switch narrators. Other than that hiccup, it was another great book in the series.

The new narrator is fine

I love these books and will continue to read and listen to them as Ahren, Khara, Falk and company bring their story to a close. I do miss the original Narrator's deep rumbling Trogadon voice but this narrator is a soft and calming voice and he keeps the volume consistent. I know we don't like change but I'd still give it a chance.

Not a fan of the switch

I’ve really enjoyed this series and look forward to the next installment. I do hope that the original narrator will be used when it is released. Switching the narrator this deep into a series, no matter how good or bad they are, changes the entire experience and not in a good way. I also think it would be wise to inform your faithful listeners when the next installment will be available. By not doing so, many followers of the tale could very well be lost. Three stars is the best I could bring myself to give this installment.

Ne’er do well

I’ve been a fan of the series. Like others, I was not happy with the change of narrator. This late in a series to mix things up is inconsiderate to the fans. On top of that some of his pronunciations are wrong and a little annoying.
The biggest problem though I think is the translation. Some of the colloquialisms are poorly chosen and way over used.
In fact you could play a drinking game with the phrase “ne’er do well”. Whatever you’re drinking, you better have a lot of it because it is used what seems like hundreds of times.
It also has its roots as a derogatory kind of racist slur against Irish debtors.
I wonder if the German version has so much repetition.

I still enjoyed the story to a degree. It did feel a bit cartoonish at times though.
The pirate book had a similar problem. The bad guys were just a bit too over the top.
I feel like I’m too far in to quit at this point.
I hope the next book is better.

Great book again

Was Hesitant with new narrator. But was great! He was not off much from previous narrator. Don't listen to negative reviews on that. The book was one of his best. thanks
