Publisher's Summary

Naval Officer Jack Samson thought a posting to the frontier of human-inhabited space was the death blow to his career.

He couldn't have been more wrong. A routine inspection of a small merchant vessel leads to devastating loss and the discovery of strange, fascinating objects. As astonishing discoveries unfold, a mysterious and hostile ship proves that Samson has a competitor in unlocking the secrets of an ancient alien civilization and that humanity might not be alone in the galaxy after all.

A not bad first contact novel

As these things go this wasn’t too bad. A fairly green Lieutenant gets thrust into a command of an old freighter after aliens destroy his ship for apparently no reason. His second in command mutinies but he is saved by the Marines and from there the adventure begins. Ancient artifacts, a pirate who turns to the good side, implacable aliens and new technology that the Terran Union must have all falling on acting Lt Commander Samson’s shoulders.

Some minor nits: Samson’s voice sounds much too mature (and upper crust British even though he says he grew up in a lower class neighborhood) for a fresh young Lieutenant. He repeats himself too much. He lets the mutineers off being shot but then gives them responsibility while saying he still doesn’t trust them. Scott Aiello does a workman like job so no real complaints about the narration. He’s good.

I give it 4 stars across the board and I’ll get the next one in the series.

Decent story, didn’t like the narration

I found the story to be reasonably entertaining, but the narration nearly ruined it for me. The narrator’s narration voice was pleasant, but his character voices sounded overdone and fake, and there were way too many accents. It seemed more like a comedy sketch than a sci-fi novel.

Good story but...

Overall it's a good story and looking forward to the next book. However, why does the main character have to sound like a Snooty English Aristocrat? It's really annoying!

Duncan at his finest

Not the usual Duncan M. Hamilton, but it is. He excels at telling stories, and briging them to life. Yet again, he has done exactly that, and left me wanting more. Yes, more! I cannot wait for the next instalment. This was absolutely brilliant, and I wan't the rest of the tale. So will you...

Abandoned due to reader

Scott Aiello has turned this story into a farce. His characterizations are ridiculous, from his terrible posh lead to the meat-head grunts he gives for the marines. I can't take anything seriously and it ruined the book. I'm giving up less than an hour in. Read the print or ebook instead.

Missed the target on this one

Duncan M. Hamilton's writing style is good but the crafting of this story left a lot to be desired. While the science elements of the story were very good, the story lacked in several areas. There was very little backstory character-building which made the characters somewhat of a muted personality, preventing much personal investment in them.

Furthermore, the MC was given to repeated and laborious introspection which added filler but slowed the pace of the story. He also came off somewhat of a bumbling fool, often swinging from on the verge of a rage to second-guessing his decisions.

Scott Aiello performance was that of a bard where he was telling the story and his style often came off as somewhat capricious.

Enjoyable listen

The narrators voice was a bit off for me, in the beginning. Clear and articulate. Just the wrong story. Then I realized I'm used to hearing Simon Vance with Dustin Hamilton. Pushed on and thoroughly enjoyed the story and narration.

Entertaining, realxing and good voice work. Will probably listen to a sequel if it crosses my eyes.

Horatio Hornblower in space

Not quite the story teller that CS Lewis was
The protagonist comes good through adversity and incompetent senior officers just like hornblower. Story was interesting and I can feel a big reveal in the next instalment
Wish the science bits were more than superficial

My 1st Hamilton sci-fi

I’ve listened to quite a few fantasy books, by Duncan M. Hamilton. This was my first sci-fi of his & it did not disappoint. I quickly got very engaged with the characters & the story moved along really well, to keep it interesting. I’m very much looking forward to the next instalment.

Kept my interest

Well written and excellently read.
Nothing dramatically new here, but hand on heart I must say that I found it an enjoyable read and am looking forward to the next instalment. Hopefully, Harper will still be around.

Really enjoyable sci-fi

I liked the pace of the book, and the narrator did an excellent job.

It is a fairly fast-paced and fun listen, and I am looking forward to the next one.

If i was forced to put my finger on something it would be that the main protagonist is suffering slightly from "Gary Stu" syndrome. A little more hardship, and I would bump my rating to 5 stars.

All in all an enjoyable listen!

Good science fiction -

I enjoyed this and wait in anticipation for part two.
Only a couple of small grumbles:
The supposedly upper-crust voice of the protagonist is dreadful.
Book seemed to stop mid sentence
