Editorial reviews

Alan Cross has been a disc jockey for over 30 years and has the pleasantly serene, confident, and cool voice to prove it. Some years ago, he embarked on a writing project intended to trace the roots and development of "alternative rock", a sometimes misleading term, as Cross acknowledges.

Cross began his history with ‘60s alternative icons like the Velvet Underground, went up through the 1980s with New Order and others, and continues here in Volume 3 with a deep dive into the ‘90s. Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, and others are placed in their context and given a thorough treatment. One highlight of this recording is Cross’s musings not only on the music, but on the shifty process of history itself.

Publisher's summary

Continuing his definitive history of alternative rock, respected music journalist Alan Cross explores the artists who revolutionized music in the 1990s. In Volume 3, Cross tells the stories of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails, Beastie Boys, The Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead and others.

Nice vingettes

Short-and-sweet retellings of the histories of some important 90s alternative rock bands. Never quite achieves a "bigger picture," and focuses a bit too much on the American side of the pond.

Behind the Alternative Music

Alan Cross does a wonderfull job at explaining why you should want to know the stories contained in the 3 volumes of this series. I found myself listening to several stories again as well as playing them for friends.

This book series is a must for anyone who loves alternative music.
