Publisher's summary

A dying planet's citizens cry out for rescue, but no one can save them all.

With the Galactic Republic in ruins and Capriana Prime uninhabitable after Moldark's assault, Magnus and his team are left to pick up the pieces. Hundreds of thousands of refugees need to be evacuated before time runs out.

But the Gladio Umbra aren't without their own problems.

In desperate need of rest, Colonel Caldwell arranges for the gladias to take refuge on a neutral planet. But Moldark's defeat prompts several key team members to reassess their roles and make decisions that will dramatically shape the Gladio Umbra's future.

Meanwhile, questions linger about Master So-Elku as he amasses strength on Worru. Magnus is forced to decide what can be done to stop the Luma leader and his relentless quest for power. That is if Magnus can keep his team together.

Find out what happens to the Gladio Umbra next in this seventh entry to the critically acclaimed series from Christopher Hopper and USA Today bestselling author J.N. Chaney.

Great continuation of the story

As much of a mega fan as I am of the previous voice actor, Grant's style and pace are perfect for this crew of characters.

A book you can’t put down

I know we’ve all read that review before. “This was a book I couldn’t put down.” But trust me when I say, I’ve never been scolded at work for listening to Audible before this book. From start to finish, every chapter had me cursing the author’s chosen break point for the chapter, and squeezing in, “Just one more chapter,” a little too often.

A stepping stone with the long wait for a new step

All the major players perform well in their own field of expertise. The storyline builds to a crescendo that awaits the next step in this world. The past promises a well looked forward continuation to the future. Kudos to both wordsmiths!

Another good one

I find myself unable to stop listening to the story and trying to anticipate what will happen next. Well done.

Grant is awesome, and that was a wild ride!

I really liked the various battle scenes, Not always easy to visualize that splick, but Hopper Chaney do a good job of communicating what you need to know to draw the image. Really love the character development too, Rohar is the best doggo! (Don’t tell him I said that)

Still great. OTF!

Great characters, excellent military action and a bit of space opera to keep it spicy and interesting. I love this series, and can connect with each of the character in one way or another. Christopher Ryan Grant is doing an excellent job of picking up a series mid-stride and delivering a cohesive feel for the characters I fell in love with as performed by his Bray-ness. For anyone who is wondering about the lower number of reviews…the story continues, it’s worth it, and just as good as it was in the beginning.

Great story

This was a good continuation of the saga. I enjoyed the storyline, and I enjoy Magnus and Colonel Caldwell. I did enjoy RC Bray narrating better.

you must unlearn what you have learned

perhaps for the first time in my life, I understand that Yoda phrase from empire strikes back. why do I start this review with that? because. if you go into this book (and last book) and the rest of this series with RC Bray in your mind for the voice of Magnus and the rest of the characters, you will never unlearn his narration and ENJOY the rest of this series (starting from the last book). if you can't let go, there's no way to move on. Just as the author discusses at the end (no spoiler) about keeping moving.

Had to say this upfront because unfortunately this series was one of the ones affected by Bray's scaled back voice acting due to surgery...and this series is a victim of Bray's magnificent narration. Christopher Ryan Grant I have heard before, and the books I've heard him in have been great! (As a sidenote: I've also heard ray porter in other series, and he was ok (once you sped up the audio speed to 1.1 or 1.15, just as I had to do in this book, to 1.15x). but Ray porter was DIFFICULT to listen to after the galaxy's edge series was all RC Bray for season 1...Bray is just THAT GOOD!) But if you can't accept that he HAD to scale back, and sadly this book and rest of the series is affected by that, and you let it bother you (as it did for me at first)...then it's almost impossible to allow CRG's abilities to stand on their own and enjoy the ride for the rest of this series.

I share this to hopefully inspire anyone on the fence about continuing the series. There are moments when I wish that CRG would have continued the similar voice that Bray used for various characters, but he did a great job of doing that with MANY. Whether or not it was intentional to not do that for every character, I can't say. But just like you go to war with the army you have, not the one you wish you had, Hopper had to move forward with someone who is darn good in his own right, and accept that the series has to move on with someone who has skills, even if we pine for the OG Bray!

PS. Well wishes to Lord Bray (splickhead! ;)

PPS. I'd you're still having a hard time with the narration difference, try 1.1x or 1.15x speed. for me it made a huge difference. I've jad to do that for other books too? if the pace is slower than you'd like. I think only 1 book ever I've had to slow down. But usually speed it up for my liking. to me, the voices sounded closer to Bray's narration @ 1.15x
