For centuries, mankind has searched for nonhuman civilizations in the cosmos. These lost alien societies have finally been discovered—but they were destroyed long ago.

Devin Starn starts off as a lowly rock rat aboard Borag, a mining ship working the dangerous end of the asteroid belt. Slowly, he gains prestige and purpose. When an alien base is uncovered, however, he must risk everything to protect his ship and her crew.

What wiped out all the civilizations that came before humanity?

Find out in B. V. Larson’s Red Company: First Strike!, a pulse-pounding, high-stakes military sci-fi adventure.

I’m sorry. I really like BV Larson but this penchant for man-pig main characters is getting so old. I usually just skip through the random and gratuitous sex, and to my shame, overlook the dehumanizing of women, because the stories are so good otherwise. This probably puts me in a small minority of men, but I have become hesitant to purchase (and quick to return) many of his new books and even series for just this reason. The formula is stale and it’s hard to root for a main character that is a legend in his own mind and basically a rapacious swamp sow.

Disappointed with how short the book is for the price. It’s almost like he wrote one book and split it into two books for more money. Story was ok but too short.

Way too short

Seems like this book is for young readers, Follow along with this good, naive-but-fast-learning, socially-challenged but upward climbing person as he chooses between right and wrong each day during his fun space adventures. Not aimed at me, even given Mark Boyett’s always entertaining narration, but probably perfectly on target for the intended audience.

Seems like intended for young readers

Loved the story of the rock rat becoming a red company marine. Then his adventures on a deep space mission. Looking forward to the next book.

Great story of rock rat becoming a space marine.
