About the Creator and Performer - Mel Robbins

About the Creator and Performer

Mel Robbins became one of the most trusted experts in the world on confidence and motivation the hard way: by first screwing up her own life.
That’s why she’s in a category all her own. As one of the most widely booked and followed podcast hosts and authors in the world, she’s sought after by the world’s leading brands and medical professionals for her research-backed tools and motivation. At the same time, Mel has amassed millions of followers online, with her advice going viral online almost daily.
A New York Times bestselling author and self-publishing phenom, Mel’s work includes The High 5 Habit, The 5 Second Rule, and the #1 ranking The Mel Robbins Podcast.
Her female-led media company produces provocative, life-changing content, with millions of books sold, billions of video views, six #1 audiobooks, and one of the most viewed TEDx Talks in the world.
Her work has been translated into 41 languages and has changed the lives of millions of people worldwide. And despite all this, Mel is one of the most down-to-earth and caring people you’ll ever meet—because it was out of necessity that she discovered the tools and research that transformed her life and got her to where she is today.
Mel lives in New England with her husband of 26 years and their three kids, but she is and will always be a Midwesterner at heart.

Not, bad but it deals with stories of other people and their problems with coaching Mel talks them through their issues. Not bad not not very helpful unless you are going through the same issues.

I want to first disclose that I now know Mel and have been engaged with her work for the past 12 months after first picking up The 5 Second Rule audiobook. There will be many reviews that will explain why Mel is in a league of her own in the self help category (and there should be) because instead of yet another self-help person telling you to "think positive", Mel shows you HOW. And this has been life-changing for me in overcoming an abusive relationship.

What I want to offer up here in the reviews is Mel's embrace of races (other than her own) and the LGBTQIA+ community. This has been essential for me, a gay woman of colour, to initially buy into her work and then stick around to do the work.

In previous works, Mel has used examples of people of colour to emphasise a point of using courage - Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr in The 5 Second Rule, she coached two gay men in the audible original, Kick Ass with Mel Robbins. In her online coaching she and her team embraced the inclusion of people who identified as gay, trans non binary, and people of colour. Her social media frequently acknowledges diversity, and she's beyond just celebrating diversity and being about "love", she's deliberately taking action in being anti-racist.

In Take Control of Your Life, four minutes in, Mel is square on about how the society we live in can impact our lives on a daily basis:

"There are very real forces that can make your life difficult. There is bias. There are pay-gaps and there is systemic racism and homophobia. You may have faced trauma, tragedy or abuse in your past. These are raw and they are real and they present obstacles to achieving your goals. And there are always going to be outside forces that impact what's happened to you and what is currently happening around you. There will be outside forces like bias that impact other people's initial opinion of you. Now you can do what you can to change those outside forces, and you should, but you're going to be in a much better place to do that when you change and empower your personal mental game."

Why am I emphasising this point in this review? Because aside from Marianne Williamson (a Jewish woman, who is much more of a spiritual leader, now turning to politics) Mel is the first white person and white woman in the self development space (that I know of) to deeply internalise this reality, and not be dismissive of this reality. This isn't congratulatory of Mel, it is simply an observation of her meeting the need of the time. And in my opinion, if you are a person of colour or identify on the LGBTQIA+ spectrum, you can feel safe here, and most importantly, you will feel like you're seen.

Mel's embrace of POC and the LGBT+ Community
