By turns vibrant and muted, narrator Khristine Hvam draws out the mirth and emotional depth evident in Dircks’ characters, creating an appealing contrast to the dystopian setting; this also gives the novel more than a fair amount of crossover appeal to sci-fi and YA readers alike.
