Publisher's Summary

Betrayal was just the beginning…

Melanie Hale is a devoted mother to her two children, a diligent caregiver to her ailing mother-in-law and a trusted neighbor in their wealthy Louisiana community. Above all, she's a loving partner to her wonderful husband, Collin.

Then there are the parts of herself that Mel keeps hidden. She's exhausted, worried and unfulfilled. So much so that one night, after a writers' group meeting, Mel begins an affair with a successful local author named Luke. Suddenly she's transformed into a role she doesn't recognize—a woman who deceives with unseemly ease. A woman who might be capable of just about anything.

When Mel finds Luke's dead body in his lavish rented house, she realizes just how high the stakes have become. Not only does she have to keep her affair a secret in order to preserve her marriage, but she desperately needs to avoid being implicated in Luke's death. But who would want to kill him? Who else in her life is keeping secrets? And most terrifying of all, how far will they—and she—go to keep those secrets hidden?

Hard to keep listening

My hate for the lead character grew with every chapter. she really did make horrible decisions and just kept making a mess of it. I made it to the end but just. I have no idea why we had to hear about her mother in law, and all that busoness.. it had absolutely nothing to do with the story. I love Xe Sands so I hung in there..but I dont recommend it.

Ugh awful people, awful book

This is pretty bad. There are no sympathetic characters here. The main character is particularly awful and morally bankrupt. She is completely responsible for her situation...one bad choice after another. Why should I feel sorry for her when she so easily chose an affair over her family, including a special needs child? We are supposed to believe this model citizen and paragon of virtue has a complete personality transformation. Not realistic. These characters don't deserve a happy ending. And what about the mother in law with dementia who is living in the MC's home? They seem to forget about her or leave her home alone a lot. Seems like there could be a case for elder abuse.

Great

The book is suspenseful and keeps you guessing. The narrator has the perfect voice. I will be shopping for books from this author.

Good but unoriginal.

So overall it was pretty good but from the beginning the first thing came to my mind was the movie “Unfaithful”. It was pretty much copied from the movie still enjoyable though.

Tenterhooks! Superb narration!

Consummately great edge of your seat thriller, replete with fully drawn and relatable characters. The most spot on, talented narrator I have listened to this year. A+

Kept Me Guessing

I’ve listened to thousands of suspense novels. I’ve foregone tv and can go through three books in a weekend. This one was good and you didn’t know how it would end after the first chapter. I like Xe Sands a lot. I like how she doesn’t make women sound like airheads. I also like that the author has strong female characters and doesn’t rely on men to be superheroes. 👏🏼👏🏼 it was worth the credit.

Predictable

The story is familiar, and the protagonist has no redeeming qualities. The writing is mediocre at best. The narrator is ok but the characters kind of sound as if they’re always on the verge of tears. I would have returned it but I have exceeded my limit on returns.
