A story only worth reading, diehard Padmé fans.

While the story was a difficult undertaking, there really was entirely underwhelming. Some issues are not necessarily Johnston's fault (like the names of handmaidens'names being so similar), in general the weakness of the story is due to poor writing.

The beginning is extremely slow and there is very little action. The lack of action would get forgivable if the interactions throughout were not flat and they dialogue so often eye-rolling level cheesy.

I really wanted to like the book but it was just not good.

Wasted potential

Star Wars is great because of engaging stories, interesting characters in a galaxy with space wizards and space battles.

This is not that.

A book about Padme's hair, her gowns, governmental procedures, a light softcore porn scene, and centering around no real cohesive story line. This book's only real purpose seems to be to fill in gaps of what happened behind the scenes.

Padme could've been made into a very interesting character, maybe highlighting why she sticks with Anakin a very flawed violent character. She doesn't really grow. She's essentially the same person she was at the beginning of the book, reliant on those around her, seemingly not able to carve her own path. Padme starts off with a noble purpose in the book then immediately abandons it for no real reason. The rest of the book is name dropping characters and hints at things we know that happen (movies, Clone Wars, comics) while Padme stumbles through being a senator.

The book only picks up at the epilogue where for the first time a character in the book shows real emotion.

Performance and production are excellent as usual with Star wars audiobooks.

Disappointed.

I love nearly all the star wars books. This one is very political and rather boring

performance was great. story was lacking.

this story was fine. it wasn't great, it had a lot of strong, female characters, which was awesome to hear. it just feels like for 2/3 of the story, they aren't doing much but planning and not a whole lot happens to them. this book is about how the Senate worked (slowly and not well) but then padme comes in they work on a bill for a bit and BAM! (no behind the scenes work, just working on the text of the actual bill). the bill gets passed and then they say "well that can't ever happen again." That is everything of consequence that happens in this book. I realize we know who padme is as a character from all the star wars content that has come out over the years, but the characters around her could have grown or changed.

Other things happen, but it is mainly to introduce padme to characters that we already know from the star wars universe. Nobody really changes or has an actual arc.

I really enjoyed Johnston's work on the Ahsoka book because the character and characters around her grew, changed and were different people from the beginning of the book to the end. This feels like Johnston had an initial idea for the premise of a story but didn't have enough time to fill it out. Ther process of getting the votes could have been eye-opening and made some of the characters face some tough decisions as to how they were going get it done. Instead, it just gets done.

the production and performance were great and what I've come to expect for a star wars audiobook. Catherine Taber and the entire production staff of this book did really well.

The performance was great but the story was meh.

The story seemed so broken up between periods and didn't have much plot line. I would have loved for it to have one specific story line that it lead up to.

Where is the story?

This was a drag to get through. Absolutely no true conflict, no climax, no story. After reading Ahsoka I had high hopes, but this drivel was terrible.

not much happened

the book was very slow and boring. nothing really happened. the epilogue was interesting though. there are so many stories they could have told, I don't know why they told this one.

This book was unnecessary.

Not really sure what this work contributes to the overall canon. I am dissatisfied at the lack of substance.

Not what I expected from a SW book

if you like politics, hearing all about padmes clothes, and a book with very little action; this is the one for you.
