Publisher's summary

In this pulse-pounding thriller from number one New York Times best-selling author Iris Johansen, forensic sculptor Eve Duncan journeys to Africa to help families torn apart by a violent attack deep in the jungle - but she may be in more danger than she knows.

A journalist shows up on Eve Duncan's doorstep with a plea for help. Jill Cassidy has just come from a small African village with a heart wrenching story: Half the villagers - many of them children - have been killed in a horrific attack by guerilla soldiers, the bodies burned beyond recognition. Now, the families desperately need Eve's help to get closure and begin to heal.

But when Eve arrives in the remote jungle, she begins to suspect that Jill's plea may have been a cover story for a deeper, more sinister plot. Isolated and unsure who she can trust, Eve finds herself stranded in an unstable country where violence threatens to break out again at any moment and with only her own instincts to rely on if she hopes to get home to her family alive....

Number one New York Times best-selling author Iris Johansen is back with one of her most exhilarating and dangerous adventures yet in this riveting high-stakes thriller. (Publishers Weekly)

Same old story...Goodbye Eve and company!

Smokescreen by Iris Johansen is a good listen...if you haven't listened to almost all of the other books that she's written in the Even Duncan series. Iris Johansen used to be my favorite author. Her early Even Duncan books were great. Unfortunately, I feel like she's fallen into the Nora Roberts trap, that is she takes the same basic plot and changes the locations, a few people, etc. and puts it out as a new entry into a struggling series. Now, clearly the series isn't truly struggling, as you can see that her books will always hit the bestseller lists and there will be a ton of fabulous reviews and ratings for this book.

It's the same old Eve Duncan story that, if you follow her series, has been done before. Eve goes someplace dangerous to do a reconstruction that she'd be better off not involving herself in. Joe Quinn gets broody and ends up joining Eve at some point in the book because he must protect her. Jane and Michael were not really involved in the story this time, but there is always a person requesting the reconstruction that has a personal stake in the reasons behind said reconstruction. This would be Jill Cassidy. Read the summary. If it sounds good to you and you haven't gotten bored by Ms. Johansen changing her basic plots and repacking them as a new story, then you will probably love this novel. In addition, if you haven't read the other 24 books in this series, but perhaps only a few, you'll likely love this too. I'm not saying that Ms. Johansen doesn't craft a good story, but I'm bored to tears by the same story every time. I'm just done listening/reading them.

Elizabeth Rodgers did a great job bringing the various characters to life with her narration. I don't think that I've listened to any performances by her in the past, but I'd definitely be more than happy to in the future!

Deducted 1 star due to abuse of female characters

I read all of Iris Johansen's books as I enjoy her storylines and writing style. This book was a typical Eve Duncan story - so if you like the series you'll like this book.

The 1 star deduction is for all the abuse of women (and child en) the story contained. I am beginning to feel like Johansen had to have women being raped in every book - like an old school 1980's era Catherine Coulter "romance". Come on Johansen - use your imagination and come up with something else to show that a woman is strong and can overcome trauma.

Also, Chapter 1 begins 2 WEEKS after Jill was almost beaten to death and Eve thinks about how "gloiwing" Jill's skin is. Really? It should be ugly shades of green, yellow and purple from the bruises. And later, Kill tells Eve that Joe' seminar and Michael's dig was arrannged by the CIA after the beating incident. In under 2 weeks? Joe, Michael and Jane were informed of the seminar and dig, booked tickets and didn't think it was a big coincidence? Right...Joe's radar would have gone off big time.

Elizabeth Rodgers narration as always was perfection.

Terrible performance

And the writing was poor. I like her books but this was a real disappointment. Unrealistic dialogue, every interpersonal interaction is unnecessarily confrontational. Dumb.

A really good book

I love this series and I loved the new characters introduced in this one. It makes me feel like we might hear about them in some future books. Great great narration by Ms Rodgers as usual.

Same old

Eve Duncan stories are always decent to great. I just got too bored with this one. Guilt trip after guilt trip. One guilt trip was enough by Jill Cassidy. Performance was great by the narrator. No complaints. I think the Eve Duncan series is getting alittle old. Not enough new ideas. Didn’t care for the journalist Jill Cassidy. Not enough of Eve and Quinn and Family.

PAINFUL

I thought I liked iris J's writing but maybe I don't.... Maybe I'm just too much of an anxiois person to sit back and relax to somewhat of a historical book... But no, no I'm not dammiyt! I love all my historical fiction that overwelmes you with emitting and just enough that you're dysentery in wondering who the characters are. My overwelmesimg gripe was simply the book and is writing
It was so far out there with the characters and the way men seem to ask all possessive and preotrctive just because he growls all testeroned up that 'he has wanted to screw her in the first three minutes he knew her blah blah blah. It's just really unmemorable. And i couldnt get through the end of The book
quick enough.
