Publisher's summary

A space adventure set on a lone ship where the clones of a murdered crew must find their murderer—before they kill again.

It was not common to awaken in a cloning vat streaked with drying blood.

At least Maria Arena had never experienced it. She had no memory of how she died. That was also new; before, when she had awakened as a new clone, her first memory was of how she died. Maria's vat was in the front of six vats, each one holding the clone of a crew member of the starship Dormire, each clone waiting for its previous incarnation to die so it could awaken. And Maria wasn't the only one to die recently....

Critic reviews

"Six Wakes is [Mur Lafferty's] breakout book."—Cory Doctorow

"This is one of the cleverest and most exciting murder mysteries I have ever read. The confined space of the colony ship Dormire is filled with feisty and memorably strange characters who bounce off one another in ways that vary from the comic to the horrific. You like ideas in your science fiction? Lafferty does for clones what Asimov did for robots. Six Wakes will keep you turning pages right up to its startling climax. Mur Lafferty scores in this, her best book!"—James Patrick Kelly, winner of the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus awards

"Mysterious and tense . . . . I wish I wrote this book."—New York Times bestselling author Chuck Wendig

Murder mystery in space

This was a very enjoyable murder mystery taking place in a sci-fi space story. Well thought out with complex twists keeping you wanting more to find out what happened.

If the author is reading...

I would guess that the author gives the life and character that was intended for each member of the crew but it felt a little flat.

The story is ok, there are some surprises that were good but then the science parts are a bit vague and not fully convincing.

I guess its an ok sci-fi book, not the best, but definitely not the worst.

Fantastic book awful narration

I absolutely loved the story after a few minutes to really let its complexity come into its own, fantastic twists that keep coming to the end. Sadly this audiobook is totally ruined by the authors flat narration. She’s very talented as a writer but I don’t know what possessed the publisher not to hire a professional actor. I highly recommend reading this book but I can’t recommend listening to it unless you’re willing to forgive the reading.

The plot kicks in with a bang in the first paragraph, and the intrigue and suspense never lets up. I absolutely loved this book!

Intriguing science fiction, interesting mystery

I just got around to listening to this book ,got it on sale last week. I really liked this story, it combined two of my favorite genres, generation starship SF and a whodunit. Clones, murder, secrets aplenty, politics too. Great stuff,

Some really sinister things are happening here and it leaves you with much to think about. I really liked the characters, especially Maria Arena. They all have secret, sometime diabolical pasts, even the AI controlling the ship. The cloning is especially well conceived as each cloning process changes everyone a little more and causes memory loss.
I know I'll look at Star Trek and "beam me up, Scotty" in a different light now.

Overall a thoroughly enjoyable listen that I can heartily recommend. I agree the narration could have been improved but didn't bother me as much as some other reviewers. This is my first review, but I'll try and do more in the future as I have many Audible books.

nice storytelling for once in concept scifi

The author actually does a good job of narration in this story which in general can be very hit and miss. I would still choose a talented voice actor if given the choice. It is told in a non linear format with flash backs but not annoyingly so. the book is a personification of the ethical realities of cloning and trys to create a clone version of the laws of robotics. some of the characters seemed a bit shallow for being >200 years old but maybe thats what happens when you make a copy of a copy.

I took a chance one this, you should too!

I had never heard of the author before, and the plot sounded like a rip off of Altered Carbon. But I took a chance on this and I'm so glad I did. This was one of the most refreshing, original stories I have heard since Becky Chamber's debut novel.

The pacing was great, the characters were relatable and the ending was perfect.

I am looking forward to watching what the author does in the future because I know it will be great!

Decidedly meh.

Clue in space, with background stories sprinkled in. Forgettable both in his plot line and it’s characters. #tagsgiving and #sweepstakes
