Publisher's summary

In his rustic, storyteller fashion, Bud Ham shows listeners how to reduce or eliminate fear in their lives by the simple process of making love-based decisions.

"The passion of my mission had its roots in my youth when I rejected the dogma and doctrine of organized religion. I drifited in and out of several Christian denominations, always seeking answers to questions which religious people could not answer to my satisfaction. My joy and enthusiasm for life and learning have been sharply curtailed by the sobering reality that we live in a troubled world from which I cannot escape. I frequently think of the many children who go to sleep hungry every night, many of them wet and cold. I also think about the many sons and daughters of God who wander homeless, hungry, and confused in every major city.

I am also painfully aware of the horrendous wave of violence sweeping the country, bringing unspeakable pain to victims and perpetrators. I pray for both. I also pray for the safety of the policemen and policewomen who are caught up in the mayhem.

The mission of my writing was to tell people there must be, there had to be, a better way. I believe what we are doing as a society isn't working and so we must try something different. I am locked into a mind-set which tells me, if what we are doing isn't working it's just common sense to experiment, test, try something different, but don't continue doing what isn't working.

If you chose to learn and grow toward the quality of life you desire to create, where you are now is the right place. It cannot be otherwise. You are in the starting gate. The only questions are, will you decide to run? If so, when?"

Wonderful narration, a meaningful well delivered message

I took this book because of the narrator. I have a number of his audio books and they are all well done. There was no disappointment here as he took the authors meaningful message and delivered it in an engaging and captivating narration. The author has a good and simple way of getting his message across without the usual dogma that can be found in so many self help/awareness//feel good books. Get it and enjoy it. not a follow these steps to better life kinda book

This is the first book I’ve read/listened to by this author. It is more like an autobiography with side stories related to things that impacted his life. In between he makes valuable comments or suggestions that are related to things he’d learned or accepted over the years. If you choose, as do I , you can ignore the statement “to become one of God’s teachers” and just pay attention to the wisdom of each suggestion. He may be Christian and bring God into his teachings, but he also often relates how each teaching/ suggestion is not a Christian idea and no one religion has the monopoly on being correct. There is something to learn from everyone.

I especially loved his suggestion to ask your partner or child to be your consultant (to improve intimacy) - to ask them how you are doing as a partner/parent and accept their comments.

I initially hesitated to request this book. So often self-help books, etc., blather on with the “if you do as I say, you too can improve your life...” or “in a moment I will explain...” and it takes 20/22 chapters until they do so, and then the content is still often lacking. The narrator, Mr. Bosco, suggested I listen to this and said he thought I would enjoy the book, so I decided to trust him. He was correct. If the book was edited down to only the suggestions or self improvement recommendations, the book would probably be an hour long, but I think then it would loose some validity. There is a degree of “where are you going with this” but hearing his background and experiences gives context and truth-fullness. And not once did he throw out one of the “Seen-On-TV style sales-pitchy” comments.

This is the second book I’ve listened to by this narrator and I would gladly listen to another. In fact, I have one in my library queue right now. He does a great job narrating this content to keep it engaging and flowing well.
He speaks clearly so I was able to increase the listening speed to 1.5x without difficulty understanding what was being said.

There are no explicit sex scenes, excessive violence or swearing.

Absolutely fantastic!

I can not express how much I enjoyed this book. I related to a lot of it. To listen to someone say the things I feel and for me to relate to what he was saying was truly a wonderful experience. I have wondered why I am unable to find a church I feel I belong to and I have issues with much of what I hear "religious" people discuss. I believe this author really knows what he is talking about and listening to this book made me feel better about myself. Thank you O.A. Bud Ham!! In addition to that, hearing David Bosco narrate this book was a pleasure. He always does a superb job. This is a book I can definitely recommend. self help

Not usually a fan of self help books, but this one found me at an appropriate time. The narrator, Dave Bosco, did and excellent job of drawing me in and keeping me focused. Well worth my time.

A nice listen

This was an interesting listen. The book is definitely autobiographical but told more from a parable perspective. As in, the author relays life experiences to get across his ultimate message. It lends a "speaking from experience" feel to the content and made it resonate more with me than it would had he just told people what to do. The introspective feel, and the excellent narration are what makes this book for me.

The Golden Rule

I don't often read inspirational or "self help" books, but this was recommended to me strongly and, not being over long plus being an audio, I gave it a shot. Mr. Ham speaks from his heart, explaining how, through trial and error, he came to his current beliefs centered around the "Golden Rule." Well, naturally if someone expresses thoughts consistent with your own, you will think him brilliant! But the process as much as the ultimate message make this a worthwhile philosophical exploration of a positive and enriching philosophy. Narration by David Bosco seemed to be "right on"; although I have no clue whether it matches the author's voice, it seemed to. The chapter and topic breaks could have been given a bit more emphasis but overall that did not detract from the presentation. I surprised myself by enjoying this immensely.
