Publisher's summary

Former space marine Torin Kerr returns for one final adventure to save the Confederation in the last book in the military science-fiction Peacekeeper trilogy.

Warden Torin Kerr has put her past behind her and built a life away from the war and everything that meant. From the good, from the bad. From the heroics, from the betrayal.

She's created a place and purpose for others like her, a way to use their training for the good of the Confederation. She has friends, family, purpose. Unfortunately, her past refuses to grant her the same absolution.

Big Yellow, the ship form of the plastic aliens responsible for the war, returns. The Silsviss test the strength of the Confederation. Torin has to be Gunnery Sergeant Kerr once again and find a way to keep the peace.

Sooo Good!

By far, this has to be one of my favorite series of all time. While the first book (7 ago!) serviceable, by the second book we got the series-long arc and some of the best characters in sci fi when Huff really hit her stride. If all military sci fi was this good, with snappy dialogue and extremely well-drawn characters, I would never read another book in any other genre again. And though The Privilege of Peace ends the series, it does so with aplomb.

Story: Humans First want Torin dead and out of the way, especially leader Anthony Marteau. But Torin is a hard woman to kill, especially since she has a tight clan of friends around her. But when it comes time to return the 'data sheet' plastic to the plastic aliens, things are about to come to a head with General Morris, Anthony Marteau, all the elder races and all the younger races in for the wild ride.

There are so many laugh out loud or simple chuckle/snicker moments as to make this Peacekeeper series a treat. From Torin and boyfriend Craig bon mots, to sexual innuendos, puns, and observations about the aliens that inhabit the book. It's so effortless and whip smart as to be almost an art form. You'd swear they were living and breathing characters, each nuanced and with their own ticks and quirks.

Of course, it doesn't hurt that Torin Kerr is such a great female protagonist. Tough as nails but with a good heart and a smart head, she is a no-nonsense woman with an agenda of keeping her companions alive. You root for her and all her crew as they tough their way through all the series has thrown at them. Those wondering how this ends and if it is good need not worry - The denouement is allowed to happen organically but with all the action we have come to expect when Kerr is involved.

I listened to the Audible version and the narrator did an excellent job with all the characterizations. There was no doubt who was speaking and why they were an alien and not human. In all, definitely one of my all time favorite series and it is with bittersweet joy that I finished this ending book.

Becoming my favorite SciFi author

I read her stuff as soon as they come out. If you like John Scalzi you will like her. She has that same wry attitude towards the intergalactic bureaucracy and her plots are solid, and the characters are engaging, and the non-humans are thought provoking. And the narrator has a drool voice that matches perfectly the words she reads.

It just gets better

Great stuff. The depth of character development makes the books so much more interesting. And the story lines are clear and mesh and intertwined masterfully . Ms Huff always had a great story, but I think her writing has steadily improved over the years.

Thanks!

I loves this action packed series. It was a great conclusion full of surprise. I almost wish it wasn’t over. I always felt like I was there.

Just love Torin Kerr!

Listening to this book was like visiting old friends you haven’t seen in a while. Wonderful characters, wonderfully narrated. This is listed as the third in a trilogy but I hope Tanya Huff decides to bring these characters back. It would be sad to say a final goodbye to Torin Kerr, Craig Ryder and the rest of the gang. Both of Torin’s series have been such fun to read/listen to. This definitely is one for those who’ve read the rest of the series. Be sure to start at the beginning of the first series if you haven’t read them yet. Well worth the Audible credit!

Very very good

I'm glad I don't live in the world that requires a Gunnery Sargent turned Warden turned bad-ass Universe Defender Torrin Kerr! But it's still a joy to listen to her adventures.

More?

I have read nearly every book Tanya Huff has written and she is a consistently satisfying read. I don't remember a bad book from her. Just want to know, are we ever going to find out what happened to Big Orange?

An amazing end to an amazing series

Torin Kerr remains one of my favourite heroines in sci fi. I’m distraught there won’t be any more of her. But you should really get this book, after you’ve read the rest of the series, staring with Valor’s Choice

I Hope This Isn't the End

I'll start off by saying that, if you haven't read any of the previous books in the two Torin Kerr series, this probably isn't the best place to start. While I sincerely hope this isn't the end of the story for Torin and Co., this book certainly wraps up a lot of threads, many of them long-running.

If you're already a fan of Torin from the Confederation/Valor and Peacekeeper series, you probably won't be disappointed in this outing. I did find the pacing to be a bit uneven, tho, especially in the first part when there were so many storylines and diversions in an attempt to fit everything into the final book in this arc. Some things were given more focus than needed and others cut too short, IMO. And, although several old foes have been dealt with (at least for now) in this arc, there are now new rifts within the Confederation itself to confront. Granted, not everything has to have a tidy conclusion, but I'm really hoping that Huff hasn't completely closed the door on possible future Torin/Confederation stories.

I read the book before listening to the audio, and have to say that I enjoyed the audio version a bit more. Marguerite Gavin always does a great job, but really shines with these books and never hits a wrong note.
