Critic Reviews

"The zombie-raising business gets slow in December, so Anita Blake is starting to see some oddball cases. She's got a neatly typed list of eight missing lycanthropes given to her by Marcus, the leader of the local werewolf pack, who wants her to find them. The trouble is, Anita's occasionally furry boyfriend Richard is locked in a power struggle with Marcus. Jean-Claude, master vampire of the city and Anita's other love interest, is getting jealous as well. To top it off, Anita has to solve some horrific murders and keep her bounty-hunting friend Edward from killing Richard and Jean-Claude. Hamilton alternates between funny and fearsome in this larky series about a monster hunter with a few dark secrets." (Amazon.com review)

A great listen

I started this series from the beginning after listening to almost all of the Vamp/Super natural fiction available. I have completed all the Vamp Academy,Georgina Kincaid,Sookie Stackhouse,Black Dagger Brotherhood,House of Night and The MorganVille Vampires to name a few. Being in between any new releases of my many favorites I was looking for anything to tide me over. I am Honestly VERY happy with this series so far. I just finished book 4 and plan to continue. I love the narrator though I see it changes later...I hope it doesn't change things for me. I like the sound effects and music, adds to the suspense. I have discovered that I enjoy the mystery,CSI crime scene and Super Natural combination.... I do miss a little romance but you can't have everything. I hope this helps someone, I always read the reviews and try to decide what I think I will like. Hopefully my points of interest can help another. This appears to be a LONG series and I hope to continue to enjoy them all. Keep you posted. EnJOY!

Hard Drivivg

Hard to put it down. Sexual but not vulgar. Violence is visual but not over done. People have good depth. You will be drawn into the darkest sides of our nightmares, but released at just the right times.

Worth a read and a listen

I am a long time fan of Laurell K Hamilton and the Anita Blake series. I’ve read all of them and when searching for my next good listen decided to revisit favorites. The only thing I would change about this is to add a little more Jean Claude. Otherwise action and Anita is a strong female lead who doesn’t get too angsty.

Needs better voice acting

It would've been great if someone had told the voice actress that Jean-Claude's accent only thickens when he's upset and Edward has absolutely no accent unless he's actively trying to pass for Ted Forrester.

Great mystery!

LOVE the narrator! Sometimes as much as I love the storyline and book the narrator can kind of ruin it. The narrator draws you in and before I knew it I had been listening for hours. Loved the story. Amazing mystery!

Story is awesome. Accents are awkward.

Where does The Lunatic Cafe rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I love the author and story. However it gets a little odd when you are hearing people that are set in Missouri speaking with what Americans would call "Canadian" accents (having spent little time in Canada I am unsure if this is just Hollywood's version or a fair description). I do know that the accents aren't accurate and it detracts from the story.

I liked it well enough

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

This one just wasn't as good as the previous three. The main character, Anita Blake, got on my nerves just a bit. I hope this doesn't continue because I really liked her at first. She seemed a bit goody two shoes.

Would you be willing to try another book from Laurell K. Hamilton? Why or why not?

I liked it well enough to continue the series.

Did Kimberly Alexis do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Yes, but her reading of Jean Claude was a bit nerving. I remember liking her previous narrations. Now I keep wondering if she changed something or if it is just me. This narration didn't seem quite as good. It seemed just a bit flat.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Absolutely.
