Publisher's summary

Angels walk among us, but so do other unearthly beings in this brand-new series by number one New York Times best-selling author Laurell K. Hamilton.

Meet Detective Zaniel Havelock, a man with the special ability to communicate directly with angels. A former trained Angel speaker, he devoted his life to serving both the celestial beings and his fellow humans with his gift, but a terrible betrayal compelled him to leave that life behind. Now he’s a cop who is still working on the side of angels. But where there are angels, there are also demons. There’s no question that there’s evil at work when he’s called in to examine the murder scene of a college student - but is it just the evil that one human being can do to another, or is it something more?

When demonic possession is a possibility, even angelic protection can only go so far. The race is on to stop a killer before he finds his next victim, as Zaniel is forced to confront his own very personal demons, and the past he never truly left behind.

The first in a new series from the author of the Anita Blake and Merry Gentry series.

Critic reviews

“Wow! A Terrible Fall of Angels has it all - a terrific new character, devious twists, plenty of action, and one hell of an ending. Brava!” (Jonathan Maberry, New York Times best-selling author of Ink and Rage)

Meh

The author is recycling Anita Blake by creating a male version. Yes the supernatural entities are different but it still feels like a retread. I stopped reading the Anita Blake books when they became repetitive and bogged down in sex scenes. This will be the last credit I waste on a Laurell K. Hamilton book

I wanted to like this. I really really did.

I came into this with hope that maybe LKH had found a new voice to share with us. But between all internal angst and the narrator's performance, I just don't.

For those who have read LKH, it's got all those long paragraphs of people's internal thoughts and they are repeated over and over throughout the book. The thread of the story is so interesting. The character's premise is SO INTERESTING. But all the beating of a dead horse on the internal angst killed it for me.

In regards to the narrator, he was very nasal and stilted. There were weird pauses in the middle of sentence like he'd reached the end of the line/page that broke up what should have been smooth phrases. It was very distracting for me. I couldn't decide if it was deliberate or not. I've not listened to anything else he's read, and his protfolio seems to be prolific, so it felt more like a stylistic choice than anything else, but it wasn't doing it for me.

A male version of Anita Blake.. as she is now 😑

I so wanted to love this book...hoped it would be a fresh new series for Laurell K Hamilton... it started with such potential but towards the middle to the end it started to sound like a copy of her latest Anita Blake book. The over explaining 🙄 of dialog between characters, the forgetfulness of power from the main character, bringing up stuff that was later not explained, the sheer foolishness of characters that are supposed to be law enforcement is too much like the foolery from her Vampire series! Returned...

Best of Laurell K Hamilton

I have read most of Laurell K Hamilton books and where I dont enjoy some of the R rated scenes in the Anita Blake books for personal preference her books have always been great especially where the action was concerned and keeping the reader's interest. This book really shows that she has written over 20 plus books in her long career. If the sample chapter catches your interest; buy it for sure or check your local library if your still on the fence. Has been a great listen and I hope she writes more in this urban fantasy world. I love the narrator that was chosen to. If you like Angel and Demon books then this book is for you.

Interesting premise, good start to a new mystery series

I don’t like angel fiction. I avoid it in general, even when it is written by authors I love. I took a chance with this because it sounded different than what I’ve seen.
The depictions of the spiritual world are beautiful and powerful. She did some deep research and it shows in the rich depictions of the various spiritual philosophies and practices. I really loved how she showed the strengths and cooperation of the different practitioners as well as the close mindedness or programming of those from the college of angels.

I felt Zaniel’s sadness and frustration about his friends as well as his longing and loneliness. I liked that Zaniel has held on to the good bits even as he faced the bad and manipulations.

I really liked the characters, main and minor. The descriptions were so natural and full that I could get a solid feel for each of them. The way the religious cult was described was intriguing, disturbing, and yet the positives were stated too. I think that many authors and people in general forget that often there is good mixed in with the bad in abusive situations. This is why it is so confusing to the vulnerable and so hard to escape.

I am looking forward to more of this series. I got bored with Anita Blake several books in, the mysteries devolved into orgies and it just got tiresome. (I read all of the Merry Gentry series and thought it both beautiful and suspenseful)
The narration is very good. I don’t usually like tenor voices but I got lost in the story, which reflects well on the story and the storyteller. His vocal inflection and emotional tone is top notch.

narrator was like listening to a robot read the book. the storyline just sucked. I'm not sure what she was trying to get at with this book. I get ones imagination of things but it just wasn't good. stick to the other paranormal vampires werewolves zombie raisers ect.

I’ll be interested to see where LKH takes this

If I’m understanding the PR for the book, it’s a promising start to a new series. I’m a big Anita Blake fan but some of the books are highly wordy with low action. The books with more action are absolutely top notch.
Loved LKH’s Meredith Gentry books but felt she and her children were left in a more precarious situation with the murder of Sholto in the last book.
I found this specific book to be interesting but not fast paced. A few times the story created a sense of urgency but then felt like it went into s-l-o-w motion. I was ready to slap Z when he had to be told 6(?) times to call Ravensong immediately about the raccoon animal totem.

Graham’s voice is not my favorite- higher range voices grate on me like nails on a chalkboard. I eventually got used to it as the story progressed, but I don’t believe he added to the story. Listened at 1.3 speed.

ok, but ...

I had a very hard time with this reader. I mean ... he sounds ... like ... he went ... to the ... Captain Kirk ... school ... for acting. It wasn't bad all the time thankfully, but at the beginning it was very distracting.

Story wasn't bad, but I'm really tired of her characters being so stupid that they have to have simple concepts explained to them over and over and over and over. That's not a problem with just this book, it's a commonality in most of her books. I am very thankful that she didn't resort to her main character having some sort of sex magic. That at least was different. This book did seam to be a long introduction. like the pilot episode to a new TV show.

I’m torn but have hope

Never read anything by author. I thought the subject matter was so cool sounding and a series! Nice. Several things wrong. Mostly the narrator. Has he ever read a book in his life? Ever read one out loud? Does he understand the importance of continuity? Voice changing of the same character. Odd voices once, normal the next. I liked the story, I liked the characters. I did laugh out loud a few times and screamed at the radio in my car too.

I hope to be able to continue with the series.
