Publisher's summary

Seven centuries in the future, the sport of American football has never been bigger, never been faster, never been more lethal. Trillions of fans from all over the galaxy watch six unique races battle in contests so violent that deaths are part of the stat sheet. Star quarterback Quentin Barnes has led his beloved Ionath Krakens to glory on the gridiron and become the most-recognized individual in history, but it is off the field where his world crumbles around him. Over four seasons with Ionath, he's picked up powerful enemies, one of which drove his sister into the Portath Cloud, a place from which no ship returns. Because his enemies include his team owner - a possessive crime lord who treats players like property - and the ruling government that controls the shipping lanes, Quentin and his friends must hide from the media spotlight as they search for a way to rescue his sister.

Set against the backdrop of a professional American football franchise seven centuries in the future, the Galactic Football League puts huge humans on the field with five alien races to create a game that is faster, stronger, and deadlier than anything we know today. Quarterback Quentin Barnes has grown from a racist, small-town standout into a proven leader, a uniter of peoples, and the Galaxy's most-famous athlete. Willing to do anything for his team, his Ionath Krakens have bound together through shared sacrifice, tragedy, devastating losses and thrilling victories. The GFL series melds star-spanning scifi, brutal crime fiction, and intense sports action into a smash-mouth extravaganza unlike anything you've read before.

One of my favorite series.

I am happy these are available on audible. As a fan of football and SciFi this was the perfect combination for my taste. a great mix of a coming of age store, football, creative future world, and craziness of Scott Sigler to pull it all together.

I really love following the Kraken's.

Cannot wait for the next book in the series!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Champion to be better than the print version?

Yes, depending on the narrator I think audio books always have the opportunity to be better than the print version, especially when the author is reading his/her own work. Sigler's narration never lets me down! great voices!

What other book might you compare The Champion to and why?

This is a series, so obviously the previous books. This series though is a little unique, aliens playing football (but that is only part of the story, you don't need to be a football fan at all).
If you like hard science fiction books and reading about the interaction between different alien races, have a listen (start at the first book)

Have you listened to any of Scott Sigler’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes! I've never been disappointed by a Siglar narration, this book is no exception.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

The book is 20 hours long, so no... I did have a hard time turning it off each listen though!

Any additional comments?

Love the series, I'm a big fan of the author. Some of his work is YA focused (which is great, and my kid loves it too), but Sigler also has some great thriller books, check them out!

Great Awesome Intense

If you love or just like football this is for you all day every day. if you are also a sci fi fan then you will not be able to stop listening. Epic story with epic characters, twists and surprises. Sports check. Drama check. Mystery check. Action check. Comedy check. Space ships and aliens check. But be warned if your not a football or sci fi fan you just might be after listening. The entire series only gets better after each book as well.

Keeps getting better

A compelling story, a mix of sports, political discourse, personal realizations and laugh out loud humor even when I listened alone! Great book, can't wait for the next!

Great series!

I've waited to finish the fifth and most recent installment in the GFL series to write a review and have to say, the whole series is a lot of fun. Not complicated, certainly predictable at times, but great fun. Most authors don't make great readers but Scott Sigler does a great job narrating this series. Our hero, Quinten Barnes, continues to mature and is faced with difficult choices in this book. His friends continue to be a source of strength for our young hero when faced with moral dilemmas. The story deals with much more off field issues than previously but returns to the gridiron to give us more of what made the earlier stories in this series so much fun. Definitely a different genre than the dark epic fantasy stories I typically listen to but very enjoyable nonetheless.

Scott Sigler is the man

I think this was my 4th run through of the series, this world just makes me happy. I do love Ray Porter’s reading of some of the other books, don’t get me wrong, but Scott knows how his characters are supposed to sound and I love someone reading their own work. Thanks a ton, Scott, for creating a world to escape to
